How could the referendum be legal when it's against the constitution? You can't just snap your fingers for it to become legal.

I mean sure Rajoy could just let them vote, but if the results were positive towards an independent state, he would have all the powers to just say: nah it's illegal, constitutional court said so. (btw. anyone could do that. Doesn't have to be Rajoy).

Crimea was annexed to Russia, so is hardly a small country. Brexit - I voted remain, but the UK is the fifth largest economy in the world. Even though I think there's going to be a lot of issues that leavers are refusing to acknowledge its not going to be complete armageddon. Plus, the UK was its country already, just decided to work with a group of others, which some people thought meant we had no independence. Sigh.

Neither of those two were with the goals of independence, unless you're considering the EU a country, and the UK getting its independence from that.
