After playing it a bunch, I can actually get behind the 10/10 scores for once. So far there's no real flaws, nothing that gets in the way of my enjoyment, only greatness! It's criminal that this game is only tied with BotW, totally should be above it imo!

I'm just going to read this as "fair warning.... our website really needs a boost to ad revenue and we feel that the only way that is going to happen is by giving Mario Odyssey a yellow or possibly red review, so far we're just waiting to hear back from finance to let us know just how clickbaity we need to make it"

I really wonder who will be the first site to try to justify giving this 70% it should cause quite the amount of "controversy" (click bait ad revenue).

Probably best not to justify the score in the slightest, just drop a 50% and at the same time review a few dogshit ios apps at 90-100 saying they're perfect outside of the controls/length/cost and lack of any graphics or music. Should get them clicks in.

...or maybe they just don't like the game as much? I mean yeah of course, giving it a "red" score (40 or below on Meta I think?) would be quite absurd, but giving it a "yellow" score isn't anything criminal especially given how for some reason 70 counts as yellow.

You know, in the end it's just really silly to get worked up over review scores. A review score is nothing more than a representation of how much the reviewer liked the game, it doesn't have any impact on anyone else's enjoyment really. And I'm not saying this as if I was immune to it, of course not - reviews for GotG Vol. 2 bother me to this day, and I'm not sure I'll ever not be annoyed by them, but I do at least know it's silly because it doesn't change anything really. Then again, DarthMetalliCube never even said they'd give it a low score, just possibly (possibly) lower than average, which as you say could be a 50, but it could be a 90 as well, or even 95.

Personally, I'm fine with it, well, because I'd like to see Zelda above Mario lol (though I wouldn't mind Odyssey keeping its 97).

Oh I'm not worked up in the slightest, just touched down in New Donk City and loving every bit of it, but I just was talking about the financial reasons why some reviews exist, they're in the business to make money and that happens by writing a review which gets hits, right now a green gets no money for a site basically.

I will always question when someone says a comment like "we always are more critical of X companies games" there is no reason behind that, if they have a problem with the developer just ignore their games, if the site as a whole is aware that they cannot review a game without bias then they have no right to appear on meta as a professional critic site. Doesn't matter if it's more for or against a game company, if the logo that fires up on screen first has any impact on the final score you give a product that just isn't a worth while review. Doesn't matter who makes something, if it's great , then it's great, taking off points because you don't like a company which makes it is just petty.

It's an overreaction because you jump to such conclusion without having anything to base that on other than "we usually don't score those games as high as others". You understand what you want through it, and attack the integrity of that guy out of the blue for no reason.

It has a lot of merit the way you manage to be always in the wrong side

I certainly can't say the same thing for all those pre-baked replies of yours. Ever think by yourself sometime?

OK

Let's close this waste conversation.

This place is Mario Odyssey review thread.

Indeed. You should have talked about Mario or its reviews instead of asking me that stupid question.

Talk about overreacting.

Are you on drugs?

Edit - I should take the time to point out that I'm not a fan of one line replies, but if you think my simply explaination of how sites who are allowed to post on metacritic are fully aware that a yellow post right now will get them a ton more ad revenue than at 70th "green" score, it's simply a matter of finances of a site demanding it happen and the writing staff needing to come up with a way to justify the review as much as possible to avoid it being too obvious.

Still though... if you think I'm over reacting to something... yeah, it's probably best time to take a re-read of my post or ya know, don't.

There's no excuse for the immature name-calling brewing in here, knock if off everyone.

I tried hard to convince myself to buy this game, but I failed. 3D Mario games are simply not for me. I would rather play SMB3. I wish Nintendo satisfies my gaming needs with a true successor to SMB3, just like Odyssey, according to the 3D Mario fans, is a true successor to SM64.

Just dropped behind galaxy 2 on metacritic all time chart, now number 8.

Technically it is above Breath of the Wild right now, but really maybe you should just accept BotW wasn't for you? 95% of people at least seem to think it is a masterpiece and one with loads of impact on Nintendo and the industry alike. Your opinion on it doesn't make anyone else wrong.

Well, yeah. The "especially with Nintendo" bit was nonsense.

How exactly is Super Mario World not a "true" successor to SMB3?

I kinda new someone would ask, this rather pertinent question. Despite being a great game in its own right, SMW was, to me, a bit of a let down when compared to SMB3. But without getting in the merits of weather SMB3 is better than SMW or not, let me ask you this: Wouldn’t it be cool if Nintendo gave us a true successor to either, SMB3 or World? I talking about new world themes with amazing new music, art and enemies. What do you think about that?

What everyone's gonna see is them both having 97 though. The rest of your post is pretty silly, for I did enjoy BotW a lot, easily my favorite Zelda game now. I'm of course aware of the general consensus on the game, and I never said my opinion makes other's wrong, though so to does their opinions not make mine wrong. I don't agree with the popular opinion on BotW that's for sure, and if you have a problem with that, well, too bad! I'm not just gonna shut up because you don't like what I'm saying, sorry.

71 positive reviews and no mixed yet... wonder who will be the first, even those un-scored and in progress reviews all look to be glowing praise for the game.

I know the urge to cash in and get all those clicks is going to be tough to resist now for any site in need of a bit of ad rev.

Though I too had some reservations, you guys saying Odyssey's absolutely brilliants makes me want to get out and buy a Switch and play Mario. My mind was conflicted, but really, it's a successor to Mario 64, and made by what's maybe the greatest dev-team ever; how could it not be brilliant?!
