Forums - Sony Discussion - PS2 turns 17 Oct. 26th. (MODS READ UPDATED OP)

Way back on Thursday, October 26th, 2000, the PlayStation 2 launched in North America. I thought it would be fun to make a thread to celebrate the biggest selling console of all time as it’s anniversary approaches.

Share stories of back then, your hopes and thoughts for the console, what games you were most excited for on day 1 and beyond? Did you reserve yours or camp outside for days for it? Or were you happy with dreamcast, or did you decide to wait for Xbox or GameCube?

Sadly I myself, missed out on preordering and had to wait till early spring of 01. I got it just in time for Onimusha, Zone of the Enders and atv off-road fury. Me and my brother headed to blockbuster to rent some crappy launch games like nba 2001 and kengo: master of bushido. Good times.

So what’s your all time favorite PS2 memory?

Here’s an old CNN link reporting on the launch.

Edit: If any mods are reading this, could you do me a favor and add some early ps2 press photos and pics of early games? Launch lines or something like that? I’m on my iPhone and don’t know how to do that on here. Just to make the thread a bit more fun to read. Thanks!

I had a PS2 a couple of years ago and had these games:

- Spider- Man: Friend Or Foe
- Midnight Club
- Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain
- Avatar: The Last Airbender
- The Sims 2
- The Simpsons Game
- Spider-Man: Web Of Shadows
- TMNT Smash Up
- Marvel Super Hero Squad
- Lego Star Wars: The Original Trilogy
- Mortal Kombat Deception, Shailon Monks, and Armageddon
- Spider-Man 3
- Astro Boy

In 2012, some asshole broke into my house and stole my Wii, PS2, Xbox 360, laptop, and some other shit from my parents. I haven't had a PS2 since. Plan to get one soon.

Wow that sucks. The sims 2 is an old favorite of mine from way back. Gotta get another copy as I sold mine years ago. :)

I remember when my n64 was 17 years old. Not sure why it was big, but it was.

Enjoy your time!

Thanks spurge. If you’re wondering why I made this thread, I guess I was just feeling nostalgic and wanted to discuss ps2. The older I get, the more nostalgic I’m getting. Not sure if that’s good thing or a bad thing.

I am thankful for the PS2 and Atlus giving us Persona 3 and 4, two of the best RPGs of all time.

They grow up so fast.....My favorite PS2 memories are relatively early ones. I was taken by the ad for ATV Offroad Fury. It's not my favorite type of game, but I tried it, and had some fun with it. Mostly, even at that early point, I was seeing things in that game that couldn't be done on the Dreamcast. Don't get me wrong, the best looking DC games were still ahead of ATV overall, but ATV impressed me on a tech level.

Zone Of Enders blew me away on a tech level. I couldn't really get into it.

Loved Dark Cloud.

Soul Reaver 2 was fairly dissappointing, but I still liked it because I was really into the story. I made it through the entire game without dying, which was more a result of it's ridiculous lack of difficulty than my skill. Huge graphical upgrade over the Soul Reaver DC port as well.

Played the first 2 NHL games on PS2. Had a lot of fun.

GTA 3. I was super addicted to just pissing around. I played it A LOT, but didn't actually finish it until I bought it on PS4.

I was pretty let down by Tekken Tag Tournament. I felt it was inferior to Tekken 3. DOA2 was better on the DC, and PS2 had no Soul Calibur.

So there's a few memories.

Thanks for the post. I too loved gta3. Was super addicting to just drive around, kill ppl and listen to the radio and random quips by npcs. Around that time devil may cry and mgs2 came out as well and I was having a blast.

That's what I'm here for. I was all over the place with that one. Lots of memories to cover so I spazzed out. :) I'll add Gran Turismo 3 just because I'm commenting again. Was pretty blown away.

PS2 is great, I bought another a few years back. Have been to half price books quite a few times building up my collection, kids love it. Couple hundred games now.

Oh that’s cool to hear. I love that store and have bought many used gaming products there over the years. As for games, I probably own about half as you. Another good place to buy used ps2 games as well as all other systems is a small chain we have here called movie trading company. Others might know it as vintage stock.

Well I had a PS1, but since I was a kid without money the PS2 was on the birthday list. In the meantime I watched my Uncle play on his PS2, mainly FFX and I definitely wanted the game and system so badly after experiencing the masterpiece FFVIII.

So I did not manage to get a phat PS2 until 2002 I would say. I got Dynasty Warriors 3, FFX, and Onimusha, 3 of my favorite games to this day.
