Forums - General Discussion - NeoGAF in shambles (now back, no OT discussion, statement from Evilore)

She has a boyfriend and said yes to a road trip with another guy. The two of them it seems. Got drunk with him and was having fun.

I can see how that can be a mixed message. I would just like to hear his side of the story. Even if this was it. He got in the shower with her, wich was clearly a mistake and left once told. I don't see the harassment.

This is not like the Heirnstein guy or whatever he was called where he didn't care about what the woman said and was doing it anyways without giving them a choice. That is harassment.

There is a deeper question to be asked here too. I need to repeat once again, I'm not saying who is or isn't guilty, I'm just considering things that people are ignoring:

As you said, she had a boyfriend and was sharing a hotel room with this other guy (rumoured to be Evilore). Her boyfriend left her because of it. Now, if he knew she was sharing hotel rooms with this guy then the only conclusion to make here is that he left her because this guy sexually harrased her. The boyfriend needs questioning and evaluating. Is that what happened? Or is it that she was sharing a room with this guy and her boyfriend only just found out? If so then clearly she hadn't told him, so for what reason didn't she tell him? Her boyfriend might well be that horrible but until we get his testimony we will not know.

Yes, i agree. I think this report is very one-sided and i think people overeacted without knowing the full story.

It doesn't 'prove' anything. People immediately want to put distance between themselves and controversy. I think that's what we're seeing here. How would those mods know any more than we do? Think about. I'm NOT saying he's innocent and I'm NOT saying he's guilty, I'm just saying we need to see proof and the woman in question needs to be asked some obvious questions, but unfortunately people are affraid to ask those questions because they fear it may look like they're siding with someone who has already been found guilty based on tweets and facebook. For society to function fairly, we need to have both parties questioned and not favour one over the other. I know for a victim of REAL sexual assault it's a harrowing time (I feel for their pain) but this is why we have courts and why real proof is needed. Have people even considered what questions need asking? I bet they haven't. They're just jumping on a bandwaggon set in motion by the recent Hollywood revelations.

Yes, the reaction of many NeoGAF moderators doesn't constitute definitive proof, but it's a clear indicator that the accusation isn't slander.

The mods know more than we do because they received message from Evilore directly.

Did they? Would be good if they said something if they did.

As far as i know they could just be unhappy with him and used this as a scapegoat. They can just aswell have overeacted at the mention of harassment without taking a moment to even analyse the situation and decided to clean their hands off it so their reputation didnt get affected aswell.

If i was in their shoes, i would probably leave aswell, but over the verbal abuse of the post event. The event itself i don't see as harassment. It was clear there were mixed messages there.

It's amazing how quickly things can implode from a single accusation on Facebook. It's a really difficult topic (innocent until proven guilty versus sympathy for the alleged victim), but regardless it's a shitty situation for the thousands of users who made up the community and now in a blink of an eye have everything shattered. What happens now? Does a new website pop up to take its place? Does Neogaf make a return? Does everyone just disperse to their previous forums (like I'm doing now)?

I'd have dispersed back here quicker but this site seems unbearably sluggish now since i've left. Tried making the post i made today, last night instead, but i couldn't get gamrconnect to load. Even today the connection's been sporadic.

I'm slowly gathering links to some of the Discords, but right now i could only help ya if you're into One Piece.

Kind of feel like GAF itself can't come back from this unless EvilLore sells the site and the new owners even care about bringing it back in its current form (and rumor has it that he once got a $10 million offer on it, so it's a bit out of the league of the average hobbyist or group of hobbyists, even if that value were cut in half today).

You're forgettingt that terms like "sexual assault" and "rape culture" include things that aren't sexual assault neither rape to MANY. NeoGaf mods weren't the brightest bulb in the room and it wouldn't surprise me if this whole thing is blown out of proportion.

lol@Khan and others calling facebook and twiiter Nazi-friendly websites. Well, I am glad your safe space (neogaf) got burnt to the ground.

This is a serious matter. There are NO conclusions to be drawn from such fragile evidence, assumption and heresay. I'm not having a go at you here, I'm just calling for people to stop and consider where we are going with these recent accusations. This is a dangerous mindset we're cultivating at the moment and it needs to stop.

so that's the reason i couldn't reach the site

i suppose now people are beginning to understand what happens when you build hysteria over something as complicated as human sexual interaction

as i said in another thread... somewhere down the line it is very likely that you will end up on the chopping block yourself over something that was innocuous or even false

this is also why "innocent until proven guilty" is the idea at the center of the justice system

apparently this guy was one of the people pushing people to be hysterical over these issues... so i truly have no sympathy for him... he's not the first and he won't be the last

Yes, the very definition has been heavily manipulated in recent years and many feminists are speaking out about it. BUT, that doesn't mean this falls into that catagory, just that it needs to be considered once we get the full picture. Remember, he got into the shower, she said she wasn't into cheating and he then left. He 'assumed' she was interested, that's it, until we here differently. Is it something that needs to dog him through life? Is it fair if that is ALL that happened?

very true... but if you try to bring reason to these types of issues in recent times, you get immediately branded as a nazi by some people or some other silly label that allows them to forego the nuance of these types of issues

Wow, surprised to see GAF go down so quickly. There have been so many sexual assault related news stories lately. I was just reading about one on ARS and somebody in the comments mentioned GAF imploding because of the same thing.

With the moderators gone, there is probably no way it recovers.
