Forums - Gaming Discussion - One word to describe the PS4X1WU era and its Game of the Generation (GotG)

I'd say Zelda, Horizon, Uncharted 4, Ratchet and Clank 2016, Doom, Until Dawn, Bloodborne, or Sunset Overdrive could all contend for GotG. Though Nintendo games are tough because do we just count WiiU and count Switch as 9th gen or do we need to count them both as 8th gen?

Destiny is only noteworthy for being a disappointment in almost every regard. Hardly GotG material.

All I gotta say is, they're lucky BOTW released on a 9th generation console.

In terms of noteworthiness, I can think of other more "noteworthy" titles.

PUBG comes to mind

BOTW released on both WiiU and Switch.

Yes, just like Destiny released on both 360 and Xbox One.

scam (DLC/ Season Pass/ microtransactions/ Lootbox/ Definitive editions/ Expantions/ incomplete games/ pay to win, etc)

Bayonetta 2 is my GOTG

but the most representative of the Generation is SF V because it  shows the decline of the developers to get money easily without effort (destroying iconic franchises if necessary)

I forgot about the troubled release of SF5. Good reminder.

DESTINY 2 improved on DESTINY's mishaps, so one would put that game their instead of the original D.....

also HORIZON ZERO DAWN along with ZELDA are to be considered also

Latter 2 released far too late to be considered for the PS4X1WU era.

In terms of fan reception: Zelda.

In terms of critical reception: Zelda.

In terms of 'noteworthiness', as the OP speaks of: Zelda.

And I haven't even played the game. Just all the buzz and goodwill that came out after its release along with the continued commercial success (which may overshadow OoT in sales). And being the killer app to a system that essentially revived Nintendo didn't hurt either.

The next closest game is probably Bloodborne, but it just isn't popular enough to rival Zelda. Destiny, however...pfft.

I'm more referring to the period between 2012 to 2016, PS4X1WU era. I need to see what sort of mark BotW leaves long-term before I can consider it GotG.

Knack 2, you mean.

Wii U might have sold like crap but there was a lot of good content on it. Bayonetta 2 springs to mind d

I agree but there were still several undeniable shortcomings for that platform.

Can I seperate this gen into 2 era's ?

2012 - 2015 : PS4/Xbone/WiiU (Gen 8)

Lies and broken promises

2016 - (present) : Switch/PS4Pro/XboneX (Gen 8.5)

Rennaissance and corporate greediness

ProSwitchX certainly feels like a new gen, eh?

the PS360Wii generation was by far the best ever. I was tentitavly awaiting every new release especially on PS3, To say i was hooked was an understatement. onto to this generation im afraid its a case of the same games....it was the ps360 specifially that drove new franchises i miss it

The competition between the 360 and PS3 certainly made things more interesting.

Is GOTG greatest of the generation?

Game of the Generation, not greatest. There's a difference.

There can be only one.

Tough question: I'm leaning more towards chronology when distinguishing generations, not power. Pro, Switch, and X are feeling like a new gen to me.

I'm not saying Destiny is great, I'm saying Destiny is noteworthy for being one of the first big 8th gen disappointments among a number of disappointments to come.

Destiny? Um what? Anyways BOTW all the way baby

BotW

what exactly does "GotG" mean?

It means wonder, excitement, joy and happiness. GotG is love, and perfection.

...oh wait, we're talking about Game of the Generation? Ehh... OP makes a solid point for Destiny, but personally I think this gen wasn't characterized by just disappointments, because there were still plenty of stellar games. So, yeah, I'll just stick to the idea of "Game of the Generation" being the best and most impactful game in the gen, which in case is probably Breath of the Wild.

Heh

Breath of the Wild is a good contender overall, will be interesting to see how other developers will borrow elements from BotW into their own open world games.
