Just a simple question. According to VGC (as of 19th August 2017), the PS4 leads by 2.5 million units and probably sits at around 3 million right now. Is it possible for the XB1 to catch the PS4 in the US?

Why do you ask a question when you know the answer already?

If one of North Korea's missiles destroys all of Sony maybe.

Was this meant to be a joke? Cause um...

Maybe it was a bit too dark since it's actually a possibility in the crazy world we live in but it was my messed up way of saying "unless something castatrophic happens, Xbox One doesn't stand a chance."

No I got you. It is pretty funny now, though I may feel bad about laughing in the future.

Problem is that they also release their exclusives on PC now. So I can play Super Lucky's Tale on PC, and then Forza.

I don't need to buy an xbox, ever, because they're competing with themselves. Thanks Microsoft.

Sega, back in the day, did something similar and had to overcome a much greater deficit so, it's possible. But I don't think Microsoft wants it badly enough. For whatever reason, I think they're content right now where they're at in console gaming.

I think you have that backwards.  Sega Genesis/Megadrive launched with a 2 year headstart over the SNES but the latter outsold the former by a good margin.

Genesis/MegaDrive:
Japan - 1998
US - 1989
Euro - 1990
Sales - 30 million

SNES:
Japan - 1990
US - 1991
Euro - 1992
Sales - 49 million

When Tom Kalinski took over at SOA in 1990, Nintendo hardware (home console) had over 90% marketshare in the US. By 1993, that had dropped to under 50%. The Genesis was on the market for two years before SNES, but only had around a 6% share of the market.

If Microsoft wanted to, they could hire the right marketing team, throw enough money around and truely compete. The blueprints are there. But again, do they want to? My guess is no.

That 90% was the NES.  You can't say the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive came back against Nintendo NES when comparing separate generations.

Further, that certainly doesn't mean they caught up with Nintendo which is the premise of this US X1 vs PS4 thread.  Better stated, it was Nintendo that caught up and passed Sega.  You really should have written your statement the other way around.  Sega never caught up to Nintendo but Nintendo caught up to and passed Sega.  Sega had a 2 year head start and still lost.

No, the point is that Sega took a company down that had more than 90% market penetration and became the leader within three years. Nintendo was synonymous with "console". In three years time, Sega had replaced that on the lips of US children. In two years, Sonic was voted (by kids), more recocgnizable than the president of the United States.

Turning the tide of public opinion within the US gaming industry isn't impossible which is what I was trying to show. It just takes really good strategy and marketing. Microsoft can do it if they really wanted to.

???

Are you sure that you're not experiencing some sort of Mandela effect about the 1990 survey in which Mario was found to be more recognizable than Mickey Mouse?

It's true that the Genesis was briefly ahead of SNES in the early 90s, but Sega was hardly some sort of cultural icon that surpassed Nintendo. I seriously doubt that Sonic was even close to Mario in popularity when Super Mario World alone sold more than all Sonic games on the Genesis combined.

You know what's weird? I've heard sites claim that the original Sonic the Hedgehog sold like 16 million units by itself. Which would make it almost as successful as Super Mario World and Super Mario Brohters 3. Obviously that probably isn't right ... but it's weird that some sites say wildly different things. I'm guessing they just combined the sales figures for all sonic games on the genesis and accidently said it was for one game.

Possibly. All depends on how well X1X does. I hope it does, though.

Can it? Yes. Will it? No

MS could pricecut it to $99 but that won't help profits much....
