Forums - Gaming Discussion - How Blizzard ruined gaming, now every game has lootboxes

I love the lootboxes in Overwatch. The game would be less fun without them.

Also, you secretly love Blizzard. Look into your heart and know it's true. You're just piss poor is all. Get a job and buy all the lootboxes you want!

Nope. Fifa has been doing this for ages, on console as well as PC.

Nope only in Fifa 17 now, its wasnt random gambling microtransactions before. Also its very clear that only now after overwatch we have this massive wave other companies doing the same, its obvious

Uhm... no.... way before Fifa 17 you paid money to open packs which had random players in them, partly influenced by the price level of the pack..... You're just plain wrong.

Why blame Overwatch? There where Loot boxes before that. Also, if you play the game on a daily basis. And get past the whole no single player/low content. You can amass coins to the point of getting anything you want. I always play the game. So I have 10,000 coins. I immediately bought all the Halloween content I wanted. Second, they increased the chance of new items in all loot boxes. You'll still get like crappy icon sprays. But they're all new items. This will help speed stuff up, so you can get the item you want. I never payed for loot boxes, ever. I got everything I wanted. There is a grind, yes. But you aren't forced to play some insanly difficult thing that intentionally wants you to buy lootboxes AKA Shadow of War. You want to play some easy stuff. Go play VS AI. You'll get your coins.

The loot boxes will go away with enough outcry and/or people stop buying them. I'm fine with it in free to play games though.

As with everything else in the video game industry, with lootboxes it is a matter of how they are implemented into the game and what kind of game it is. In a free-to-play game I think lootboxes are fine, as they are one of the ways games like that can bring in revenue they don't get from actually selling the game. However, in a game that already costs $60 dollars to buy, with a possible (probable) season pass often doubling that price, paid lootboxes are an awful practice that devalues the games they are in.

No, you should thank valve for this. It all started with team fortress 2.

Actually, it was Bethesda and their damn Horse Armor, wasn't it?

Don't give them too much credit. It all started way before Overwatch. You could blame Valve for it but they just ripped it off from trading card games. So actually it's Nintendo's fault.

Wizards of the Coast came up with the random pack model for a card game, and that model was inspired by Sports cards. People seem to forget that Magic was around for years before Poke'mon hit the scene.

The really funny thing here is that pack-based games like MTG, Poke'mon, and YuGiOh are trash compared to games that come complete or in cheap expansions. Just look at Smash Up, Shadow Hunters, Catan, etc. All these games are infinitely better than MTG/YGO and you only need to spend fifteen to twenty bucks on them.

I don't really mind these lootboxes in games most of the time, because they are always games that I never would have played anyway. Overwatch, Destiny, and Forza are good but they just aren't for me. But with Shadow of War, I'm pissed because I was really looking forward to it.

Should be titled: "How the gamers ruined gaming"

Horse armor is more like dlc and not loot boxes. Different things.

wow... You must feel so clever right now...

OP:

I love lootboxes and hope they will add this to more games. Unless the lootboxes are really required to progress or unlock anything else than cosmetic content, I think it is a good thing. I'm playing a lot of games wiht lootboxes and it is not like I'm forced to pay for them (which I don't). I have like 150k gold in Heroes of the Storms and something like 100 unopen lootboxes and I open them in batch when I feel like it. I started Shadow of Wars and the lootboxes are very well done. You do not need them basically if you don't want to; so nothing wrong here.

I really think it is very exceptionnal where lootboxes are actually mandatory to complete the game experience and then it sucks yes, but I don't recall any games where it was actually the case. I mean, if the player really feels the need to use them for XP boost for instance just because he or she wants to get everything faster, it is their problem after all, nobody is forcing them to do so... I think it is a very elegant way to make money for the players who are willing to pay to get there faster

At the end, this is a gamer thing. It works and majority of gamers most likely like it (or do not hate it enough) or they would not do it... So no, I don't think they ruined everything with that.

Also, loot, brings loot and rarity in every games :) I just love the sound of that legendary Plate Armor dropping after killing that rat!
