Gotta appreciate the wisdom and knowledge of VGC's armchair expert developers.

30fps for sonic is just a very bad idea. They should downgrade the graphics more to reach 60fps.

Sonic Colours is very well received, and at 30fps

And Sonic Generations too.

Uhhhh. We still only get the visual information of 30 frames per second, though. The visual info being the info we react to and base our control response on.....
What a load of bull.

Many mice and keyboards on PC operate at a significantly higher rate than the games rendered output framerate... The result is... 30fps is still 30fps, which is okay for some games... But not okay for others, thus this isn't a "new" thing by any stretch of the imagination.

Still. I would reserve judgment untill giving it a go in person, if it's a stable framerate with low input lag and good frame times, then it might feel okay.

Well, yeah, you're right. I don't think it's neccissarily imperative for Sonic to run at 60fps, but it will always feel better and give you more room for reaction and more precise gameplay.

To me a stable 30 is actually preferrable to an uncapped 30-60fps range, but unless you're going to go full M2K and frame analyze a Sonic game, you're not going to gain much from the improved response time, because you're still not clairvoyant.

Who knows, maybe they'll prove me wrong and it will actually feel solid, but I doubt it makes much of a diffrence. Like you said, 30fps is still 30fps after all.

Thats why I wrote if its "graphically exactly same in portable and docked mode", we know it has same resolution and same frame rate, so if its graphical exlatly same in docked mode it lazy port because they could definitely use higher GPU power in docked mode for higher resolution or better visuals.

or the undocked mode could have lower poly count, less draw distance etc. hence not graphically the same.

But I havent checked if there is any outlet which provides info on this so maybe i am mistaken.

I was very clear, "if its graphically exactly same in portable and docked mode", than its lazy port.

Odyssey runs 720 fp 60fps on handheld and 900 fps/60 fps docked.

actual footage

trailer footage (probably worse than final footage)

What a load of bullshit.

You can see from the screenshots that Sonic's effects and geometry are more advanced than in Mario. It's taxing on weaker hardware while not looking significantly better as a whole.

Mario was built with weak hardware in mind, so techniques to obfuscate low quality assets are built in from the start. Sonic wasn't built for low end hardware so they would have to put a significant amount of effort into the game to rewrite how the physics, effects and visuals work. But why put work into a game on a console where 720p and 30fps are considered just fine.

1st party games on the Switch will always run better for roughly the same visuals than ported 3rd party games. Developers might be more inclined to optimize their games for a specific platform if people had higher standards, but they don't.

Borderline offensive. Considering pressing the report button.

I'll reserver judgment until I actually play the game.

1080, 720. 30 or 60. This game is going to be terrible either way imo.

I wonder why they're not utilizing the extra clock speed when docked...

That does sound... interesting o.O Have any games ever done that in the past? And is it/would it be noticeable? o.O

I remember that Art of Balance calculated physics in 120fps to get a more realistic feel.
