Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Dragon Quest XI For Nintendo Switch Will Be Using Unreal Engine 4

"Ever since Dragon Quest XI was confirmed for Switch – which was quite a long time ago at this point – we’ve been wondering what sort of game it would be. Many had assumed that it would be based on the PlayStation 4 version, but Square Enix never actually came out with any sort of official word on that front. In fact, we’ve heard almost nothing about the Switch release.

The Unreal Fest East 2017 taking place in Japan today finally offers some notable information. Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii was in attendance, and strongly suggested that the Switch version will be based on the PlayStation 4 edition.

Horii basically said that Dragon Quest XI for Switch is developed with Unreal Engine. He questioned if it was okay to say this, with producer Yosuke Saito joking that maybe it’s a 2D version made with the tech in order to blur the clarity of what Horii said (which probably shouldn’t have been mentioned). But then programmer Mitsuru Kamiyama noted that it’s likely the PlayStation 4 version.

Unreal Engine 4 supports Switch from version 4.15, but Dragon Quest XI was developed under 4.13. Square Enix still seems to be working on the porting process.

This isn’t something that Square Enix said, but version 4.15 appears to have a number of benefits over 4.15 (*meant to say 4.13*) such as improved load times, the ability to process objects more efficiently, etc. The engine itself is optimized, so there is a chance that the gap in between hardware capability of the PlayStation 4 and Switch might be slightly less due to the engine’s improvement."

We all kinda knew in the back of our heads that it would but the confirmation is good. I'll definitely be skipping getting it on PS4 if it comes stateside. I know the PS4 verison will probably look better in some areas and run a bit better but that's to be expected. And although that'll be the case, the Switch version probably won't be very far off. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a damn good port.

never played a dragon quest game.If it looks good on switch,i may try it later.

I'm skipping the PS4 Version and waiting for Switch because I own a PS4Pro.

4 ≈ One

900p + high AA on PS4.
540p + no AA on Switch?

Isnt the PS4pro almost 1800p? with checkerboarding.

Would you rather play it like 540p on the switch?

Personally, nice graphics are one thing but when you're grinding in the same areas for hours in front of a tv, nice graphics start to matter a lot less compared to portability.

Thats expected, offcourse it will be based on PS4 version, not on 3DS version of game.

If it's the same as the PS4 version with less graphics I'll wait and buy it for my switch, having it portable is way too good to pass up.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

Looking at the only comparison for detailed graphics in UE4 we have - Snake Pass - Switch is much more likely to be at or very very close to 720p.  I would bet on 720.  And also, tendancy seems to be to keep AA in UE4 games rather than lose it for a higher resolution.  Snake Pass has high quality AA for example.
