Forums - Movies & TV - Blade Runner 2049 has disappointing opening weekend of $32-35 million

Eh not sure why people would expect huge box office. Blade Runner is pretty damn close to being a full on art film, lol, it's not some fantasy action franchise.

I believe Ryan Gosling has one total film in his career that made over $100 mill domestic and that's La La Land, largely off Oscar hype. He's not exactly a huge box office draw. $35 million would easily be the largest opening of Gosling's career I believe. Harrison Ford hasn't been a real movie star for like 15 years.

$35 mill opening sounds about right to me. 89% is a good RT score, but it's not like it's some unheard of/impossibly high standard ... Spider-Man Homecoming, Wonder Woman, Logan Lucky, War For the Planet of the Apes, A Ghost Story are all above 90%. Heck, Girl's Night starring Queen Latifah also is 89%.

How is it falling massively short if it is only 5-8 million behind 40 million$? I'm confused ...

Also Ryan Gosling is a huge star, not just Harrison Ford.

Either way, I doubt it's a good movie, I doubt it's original, and I think we need new franchises. I can't say i'm happy it's failed though, just mixed about it.

You young people...

It's an excellent movie. I watched it yesterday. The movie has some amazing sound direction. Holy shit.

What does it have to do with being young?

Could be long and boring to some. That's what I didn't like about the original anyway.

Again, what does that got to do with me being young?   Saying that original intellectual properties need to be made, instead of sequels to old movies, is usually something that old people say.

I watched the new season of Twin Peaks! TWIN. PEAKS. Do you know how much that show drags on????

If you didn't like the original but like the new one, i'd be worried about how good the new one is : 0

I wasn't really saying it was bad, just that those might be the reasons it didn't do hot.

It was a joke, get over it lol :D

Seriously though, go see it. It's worth it for the sound design alone.

I know it was a joke lol, just pulling your leg I didn't know if you were being semi-serious

Nah. I haven't seen the original in a long time. And I don't really watch movies. I don't remember liking the first one either. I was like, 9 though. But still!

I think people are also expecting something unrealistic from this movie. When I hear people discuss the original, they make it out to be something much much more than it actually was. They also expect this one to be much much more than it was ever intended to be.

I think the original had some great ideas, but it was also very flat in the plot. It was visually nice, but had not much substance. The characters were all very sterile as well. It’s one of those movies that wasn’t really fun to watch, but was fun to discuss and pretend you liked it, because it had a few very great moments, and it had a lot of interesting concepts.

I’ll say this, if I can sit through the entirety of this film, then it will be more than I can say about the first one.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Does The Rock bring people in though? He has quite a lot of bombs.

San Andreas, The Fast and the Furious, Jumanji 2, Moana, etc. all had him blatantly advertised as one of the main selling points of the movie. He can absolutely bring people into seats.

He's still a bit player in F&F. Moana is a Disney movie so it makes money no matter what. Baywatch bombed. We'll see how his next 3 movies do.

The market that this should appeal to know nothing about it because they were both either in the 90's or 20's. This movie will only survive if Europe and asia has the understanding of the history of the first movie.
