Forums - Gaming Discussion - "Dark Souls is Not Hard"

Oh but the Souls series are definitely hard, they are not the hardest games out there but they are hard. The real question is why do they have the reputation of being the hardest of all? Well I believe "hardest" is a misnomer for these games. What makes them special is that they are unforgiving, they require precision, strategy and tactics and how they perfectly balance all those aspects.
So well in fact that it is probably the cause for these games to have been called the hardest out there.

Dark souls difficulty has become a meme. As for me, i like everything about Souls games except for playing them.

Dark Souls isn't hard as much as it demands that the player pays attention. Anybody can get through a Dark Souls game so long as they...

1. Always stock up on proper items.
2. Learn to teleport back to the bonfire before they lose all their souls.
3. Summon Sunbros to help you conquer the boss.
4. Don't die to the boss when you've got 3 sunbros helping you out.
5. Actually explore the level that you are in, for loot.
6. Build a character that isn't trash.

7. Fight enemies one at a time, or in as few numbers as possible.

Go back, and play Dark Souls 1 with the pyromancer. Do all the things I mentioned. It'll be a walk in the park.

After that go back and play with a Theif. Never use anything but your stock theif armor and knife. Don't bother hunting down titanite shards to upgrade your gear. Instead just upgrade your gear with whatever titanite shards are easily found on the main path. Don't bother trying to find every last Estus flask shard or upgrade. Instead try to get to the end game with just a couple more sips, than the base Estus flask provides. Don't summon sunbros. Run forward in every level like an idiot, and try fighting three or four enemies at once instead of baiting them out.

Oh wait you died over and over again playing like that? Git Gud then!

I played Nioh.... which I assume is very similar to Dark Souls. It's very challenging but using tactics will ensure you success. This should be the same for the Souls series. Haedox makes good points... but I can't stand his videos because his voice is so fucking stilted and he always sounds bored. I want to be able to into them but I just can't.

It is. I've played Nioh and every Souls/Bourne but DS3.

Those games demand that you pay attention and have a little patience. That's about it.

I haven't played Dark Souls, but the N-Sane trilogy ain't that difficult, and I hear that they are similar

The first game is atrocious. Some levels are just rage inducing. Unless one is into that kind of thing.

I hate when people say Dark Souls is not really hard, or that is a fair game. Is very hard and very unfair. I finished Dark Souls 1 and I liked it, but it was too stressful and most people play to keep the stress out and not the other way around.

Explain how it is unfair

How it is not unfair?

Are you joking? Really?

First of all, I would have preferred your own argument. Second of all, the "bearded guy" - the completionist. He pretty much has a vendetta against Dark Souls. not joking. This guy is a "completionist". He plays some of the toughest games out there, a lot of them retro. But he can't stand ... Dark Souls? Really? Either he's not a completionist, or he just sucks. And this is coming from a fan. He's even said he never wanted to play the game because he got so many requests from it. He's been a contrarian on the game forever, honestly. I remember seeing his Dark Souls vid when it first came out.

"You don't know where you're going" - Really? I never got this complaint. The one area you're supposed to go in for Dark Souls to progress is literally the most obvious area to go in - the area right in front of you! Once you're dropped at Firelink Shrine it should be obvious as hell where you're supposed to go, especially given the difficult and symbolism of the other areas. You'd essentially have to cut out all the other areas too make it anymore obvious, which would ruin the shortcuts and open world nature of the game.

"The most important item in the game is obscure. You cant even find it! I'm of course talking about the iron ring"

..... BAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA. Oh.My.God. This is the video you want to use to represent your points? Holy shit! The iron ring is the most important item in Dark Souls!

By the way, this comes from a guy who loves games with cryptic messages and who can't get through a game without a guide. So even if this was true(it isn't), it would be hypocritical.

The items don't  lie to you, that was one item that was mistranslated. I'm pretty sure that became a legit item in 3? I'm used to using that item honestly.

It's not that hard to progress in Dark Souls , holy fuck.

Gotta be honest, his criticism of it being like Ocarina of Time from a combat standpoint shows the arrogance. Ocarina of time doesn't allow you to do cool things, like exploit the enemy or learn super cool items or magic spells to fight(there are spells but it's kind of hard to use them in a fight). Ocarina of time is restrictive to just Z-targeting, Dark Souls actually encourages you don't in several moments. Even that has nothing to do with fairness though, just personal taste.

Goodnightmoon, do you have any real points about Dark Souls? Have you actually played it?

Yes I completed it 2-3 years ago, I see all those points valid since I suffered them too while playing it, I really felt the game was quite unfair with the player
