Forums - Microsoft Discussion - You're suddenly put in charge of the Xbox division. How do you steer it towards a recovery?

1.Buy Take Two (GTA exclusive) (Minecraft was a stupid move)
2.Buy 5 Good third party exclusives by year
3. Build new studios and Make new IPs "no Shooters" like Fighting, RPG or Adventure
4. Pay the best Marketing Campaign

I don't get why anyone would think Minecraft was a bad move. Do you know how much money MS has? Microsoft has so much money, that they were willing to pay that much for Minecraft because they believed the profit generated from it annually, would outweigh the amount of interest the money they used for Minecraft would accrue annually sitting in a bank account. Just a stupid amount of money. And Minecraft was a good acquisition. There aren't only vidya games but books, toys, clothing, all kinds of shit.

If the Minecraft deal we're taking away from other gaming prospects, ok, maybe. But good luck proving that. And even then.... it's fucking Minecraft.

Thats the problem with fans, we know its not doing what it should be. Xbox sales have droped this year, Minecraft sells more on othr platforms, They wasted so much money that could have bought multyple studios that make multyple games each, but untill Phil comes out and says "yea we probably should not have done that" fans like you will keep saying, "this is the best thing ever". You guys have to learn to be critical of what you love, its the only way to improove.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

What I would do, that I think is within a reasonable budget:

1. Hire better script writers for Halo, force Split Screen into the game, and get the team to focus on making a strong campaign and less on multi player
2. Cut the budget for Forza, so it goes from being annual to every second year, money is better spend elsewhere.
3. Give the Fable franchise a proper comeback
4. Gears seems to be in good hands, so won't change much about that franchise
5. Make Rare focus on Banjo-Kazooie games
6. Keep Ori, Cuphead and Recore as core Xbox franchises
7. Get Mojang to make a Minecraft sequel or another game exclusively for Xbox/Windows 10
8. Make Xbox One mouse/keyboard compatible
9. Bring Age of Empires 4 to the system
10. Make Microsoft Office available for Xbox One

1) Team Up with Nintendo (XBOX rebranded as a Nintendo division in JP)
2) Revamp 1st party studios (RARE) back to the glory days
3) Co-develop a new Switch in the future ( extremely powerful when docked, great portability, larger memory, etc)
4) Cross-platform games (ex. Forza & Xenoblade on Switch/XBOX)
5) Create/Buy studios, develop new IPs and revive cult classics

The new hardware is all about gaming and ease of development. I don't pursue any future deals with media companies and focus my attention on a streaming service, indie games, PC/console exclusives and try to recreate the era of the first PlayStation.

so.. How did it improve the xbox division?

If they were doing the Minecraft deal to improve Xbox then I doubt we'd be seeing Minecraft on other consoles. Again, Minecraft encompasses a lot more than games. This was a big deal for MS that was a smart deal even outside their own gaming division. Just don't make the mistake of assuming that 2.5 billion on Minecraft came out of the Xbox budget lol.

Yeah, go ahead and link to where I said the Minecraft deal is "the best thing ever!!". I said it makes business sense for them. I don't play Minecraft, I don't care who owns it. Also, your mistake is in assuming that because they spent such and such on one thing, that they'd have spent that money on studios if the Minecraft deal didn't exist :)

Maybe the problem is non-fans. I don't particularly care for MS games, never really have. I like their controllers, hardware, and Live. I am fine with Microsofts output. It's not about not knowing how to be critical, it's about tastes.

Not sure that's Microsoft's goal with XBox. It's not about outselling the competition, it was never about outselling the competition.

I don't think any industry was ever about outselling the competition.

Didnt they say at the Xbox launch that it was in fact their goal to be number 1?

You tell me.

It was always about outselling the competition. Their wording ALWAYS was reflecting that as was every time they boasted about it when they outsold the competition. They've just recided to not announce numbers anymore as they kept falling very far behind.

It's kind of naive to believe they aren't in it for the win. Of course they are, they just made the wrong decisions.

I'm no business major but I think profit is more important than market share.

The Xbox one is screwed there is no helping it as its to late in this gen to turn it around.
Focus on the next gen, launch in 2019-2020 so start developing new IPs for it now, invest in new studio's that will work only on next gen titles, don't waste development time on xbox one stuff. Come out of the gate with lots of titles and the promise of at least one exclusive title each month

Change what??? Leave my Xbox division alone if you prefer PS go there...

Sony
Revenue
¥7.6 trillion (US$ 68 billion) (2017)
Operating income
¥288.7 billion (US$ 2.5 billion) (2017)
Net income
¥73.3 billion (US$ 656 million) (2017)
Total assets
¥17.66 trillion (US$ 158 billion) (2017)
Total equity
¥2.49 trillion (US$ 22 billion) (2017)

MS
Revenue
US$89.95 billion[1] (2017)
Operating income
US$22.27 billion[1] (2017)
Net income
US$21.20 billion[1] (2017)
Total assets
US$241.08 billion[1] (2017)
Total equity
US$72.39 billion[1] (2017)

Why again MS should want to look like Sony??? And who exactly should learn how to do business between the two???

I think lots of the stuff people have said is important, but I also think Microsoft has a problem with long-term vision.

So, on top of what people have been saying, I'd say spend more on putting out sequels of games that were moderate successes/disappointments sales-wise (Quantum Break and ReCore come to mind, but also Alan Wake and the like). That shows some long-term commitment that I frankly don't see from Microsoft in many of their consumer-focused products nowadays.

If all else fails just copy the Switch.

Open up new studios to create new exclusives with the hopes that they become good IPs. Give studios free reign on what they want to create. Stop putting console exclusives on win 10. Pay for ports of japanese games. Don't cancel games. Allow modding on any game as long as the dev is ok with it.
