For comparison: The original takes 6 GB on PC, and Special Edition takes 12 GB.

That implies that we should get the better version of the game, with improved textures and such.

Like... better than the 4k resolution in the SE? Impressive! :p

Yep, it's bigger, which is odd. I wouldn't expect it to be because of mod support though, since it doesn't have to take any space and it's built into the PC version(s) already (i.e. it's included in both the 6 GB and the 12 GB number).

Some games are bigger to download than install it was the same on Wii U and other platforms as well, I think the platforms needs the extra space to make a sort of temprary download client to download the game in its allocated space on storage.

Actually it's probably the installation process that can take up extra space as files are being uncompressed and both the compressed and uncompressed version might need to be on the disk at the same time, but I imagine that's the case on other platforms as well.

Not too bad, considering how big 2k18 is :p

More likely shows that some of the formerly in engine cutscenes have been moved over to a pre rendered format to go easy on processing power in certain scenes that the switch might have been having troubles with.

Just a thought, unlikely to be having higher resolution textures than the PC version on the Switch if you get me.

There are precisely zero cutscenes in Skyrim that could be handled in a prerendered fashion and zero instances where doing so would provide any benefit whatsoever.

I suppose motion controls, the Breath of the Wild outfit and weaponry will take up a whole extra 2.3GBs. This seems quite bizarre.

It also comes with all the DLC, it should explain the extra GBs

The special edition comes with all the extra DLC, so assuming that the Switch version is based on the special edition, my point still stands. It has an extra 2.3 gigs dedicated to motion controls, BOTW outfit  + weapons and Amiibo features.

They could be using a lower power form of compression for the textures, or there is a lot of Amiibo support we don't know about.

can't really imagine 2.3GB of amiibo content though, would be nuts, you could be on the ball with the compression techniques in use though, make it easier for the cpu and slower memory to handle if it isn't decompressing as much on the fly.

Imagine if they went the Smash Bros route with it.
That would be 2.3GB or more easy.

I'm pretty sure there are, because during a lot of 'cutscenes', you can't really do anything meaningful. That said, I too don't remember there being any cutscenes that seemed especially heavy so it probably doesn't even matter.

The only real area's that it would streamline the gameplay would be where a faster system was able to hold an area in memory and display a cutscene ongoing elsewhere, the Switch might find it easier to handle such a thing by simply popping a pre rendered version of the other scene overlayed rather than dumping the current scene only to have to redraw it before allowing gameplay resume.

That said, I've never actually gotten around to playing skyrim so I don't know the games ins and outs, was just speculation on what the extra size could be as obviously there has to be a reason why this is bigger than the anniversary edition on PC.

Cutscenes in Skyrim aren't really cutscenes.  You're just stuck in place in the game world.  The scenes playout in no greater fidelity than gameplay.  So they are no more demanding than gameplay and also don't have the kind of transitions needed to mask a switch to prerendered graphics.

Yeah I've seen the intro movie and was thinking "that would be pointless/impossible since your character has to be there" but was thinking there might be stuff later like I said with cut aways to a different scene, I'm sure digital foundry will be taking the iso of the game apart while I put on my master sword and Wizards hat and cut up all 14.3GB of this thing next month :D
