Forums - General Discussion - American or Japanese cartoons?

Do you prefer American or Japanese cartoons?

American 29 27.62%

Japanese 76 72.38%

Total:105

Unlike video games, where I'm heavily biased biased towards Japanese games, I prefer American cartoons. In comics I like Thimble Theatre, Marvel and Batman. For animation I really like Looney Tunes, SpongeBob, Popeye, Woody Woodpecker, Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry and Felix the Cat.

I assume many people are going to go with Japan because of anime here. I do have more experience with American cartoons, but I do like the anime that I've seen too.

Cartoons I liked to watch:

American:

  • Tom & Jerry
  • Buggs Bunny
  • Looney Tunes
  • The Pink Panter
  • The Road Runner
  • Mickey Mouse
  • Donald Duck
  • Ducktales
  • Courage the Cowardly Dog
  • The Powerpuff Girls
  • Samurai Jack
  • Scooby Doo
  • Animaniacs
  • Ed, Edd and Eddy
  • The Smurfs
  • Felix the Cat
  • ...
European:

  • Pingu
  • Bob the Builder
  • The Adventures of Tintin
  • Vicky the Viking
Japan:

  • Pokémon
The only ones I still like are the American classics.

American as in US? Or American as in North American? Cause Canadians make some good shit. Anyway, don't leave out Europe!

Anyway, depends. I think anime is much prettier looking and has running plots which can keep me interested. On the other hand US cartoons are something you can turn on and leave on in the background. And they don't often have a huge plot going for them. Of course, this is the average, not the rule.

For me, I hate Japanese voice acting. People pretend it's amazing but it ain't shit. I'm fine with regular Japanese people talking. But for whatever reason whenever they VA the girls all sound like chipmunks and the guys talk like they're all buff or trying to hard. It's grating. And I'm not a fan of lowest common denominator Japanese comedy which mostly consists of: *insert sex joke* -> *character gets bloody nose, makes loud noise, and falls over* and shit like that. It's boring.

US cartoons have better VA and have slightly less cringy jokes. The humor is rarely clever, but it won't make you want to kill everyone. But these cartoons tend to also be uglier, imo.

So for me... depends on what I want: Do I want to watch something or have something on in the background?

I quite enjoy both.

Uhh, here are some popular american cartoons that are considered good:

1. Rick and Morty
2. Bojack Horseman
3. Avatar
4. Teen Titans
5. King of the Hill
6. Steven Universe
7. Gravity Falls
8. The Loud House
9. Samurai Jack
10. Johnny Bravo
11. Classics (tom and jerry, woody wood pecker, etc.)
12. Spongebob
13. Fairly Odd Parents

I'm honestly not sure. I will say manga is typically much better than American comics, but it's hard to prefer American or Japanese cartoons. Both fill up certain interests that the other doesn't

Both.
