Forums - Gaming Discussion - Square to focus on multiplayer over single-player, games as a service

http://www.psu.com/news/34253/square-enix-future-games-to-focus-on-multiplayer

I know ppl disagree with me a lot here, but I doubt most will this time. After being disappointed with FFXIII and XV, I have not been pleased with Square. FF7 Remake sounds scary: Action combat. Episodic. No news in a long time. Development troubles a few months back. Nothing at TGS. Kingdom Hearts 3 taking 200 years. They keep announcing game after game but put out few, dividing their resources so that games will take forever to complete. And now this crap!

Besides Dragon Quest XI, There is nothing coming from Square that excites me now. Everything else depresses me. I remember when Square was great. In the 90s to early 2000s they were fantastic! FFIV, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, Parasite Eve, Einhander, Chrono Cross, Ehrgeiz, FF Origins, FF Tactics, FFX, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Crisis Core, Dissidia 1 and 2, and even FFXII was a great game, even though it strayed too much from previous FF games. Square was king of RPGs. Now they put out embarrassing mobile games and are heading to multiplayer crap that they aren't known for. Games as a service? That's what I expect from EA, not Square.

Square is not the company that they were. True FF is all but dead. The deep single player RPGs that play like a story book mixed with a fine game of chess are being watered down to social action based stuff. I don't want it Square. You won't receive a penny from me

You're not excited over Octopath Traveler :0 ? Or do you not have a Switch?

Regarding this ...

It's sad ... but honestly I expected it to happen. Wonder if they'll keep some games non episodic

Clickbait thread title. And those are all your OPINION btw. I really liked FF15 and an action oriented FF7 has got me really excited.

Now this is one topic I do agree with you on. The approach that Square is taking with FF just isn't for me. Why couldn't they just do a solid remake off FFVII on a single disc and it would have been out by next year. By the way this is going we're not getting part 1 until 2019 at the earliest. And by then Sony will have probably released the PS5. Part 2 will probably come 2 years later in 2021 and then part 3 will be a dual release on PS5 and PS6. I'm telling you! I miss the Square that just delivered solid game releases in 1 part and they didn't milk the hell out of one game of an entire IP.

The only glimpse of hope for me is Armor Project which heads development of Dragon Quest main series titles. They put way less money into development, they spend about 3-4 years on a project, announce it in a timely fashion and release a quality product that makes its money back the first day on the market and then some. And gamers are pleased with that solid schedule of releases, at least I am.

Look, I understand Nomura has a thing for making exquisite experiences and to his credit, his work ends up being pretty amazing. But what we don't realize is Square is taking a more western approach to developing FF. They are aware that the west responds very well to their new direction of action based combat which is fine but for me, I'll stick with experiences that remind me of the glory days of FF. Imo FF needs to die and Square needs to move on to a new JRPG series made in house that can take its place.

But that's just me, and hey XV is selling well, people seem to love it, (I didn't) but if the audience is responding well then hey good on them. FFVII looks great so far but I'll probably be finding out that Aerith dies on my deathbed.

Project Octopath Traveler is an amazing traditional RPG by Square.

Of course they are my opinions! I don't thrive on views. I don't make a penny either, so there is no clickbait. It's in the article.

It does look nice, but don't expect it to be the norm anymore.

I think a lot will depend on sales and ratings. Square Enix is not stupid (I mean, not as stupid as some other companies) so they will keep focussing on games that make the most profit.

Sounds like great news too me.

No surprise. Where is the money in Japan? Monster Hunter? Splatoon? Social-centric mobile games?

I can't blame them for following the money.
