My 9 year old 52" 1080p tv in the livingroom is not doing so good anymore. A blue pixel pattern and fainter red blotches are overlaid on the entire screen like a bad film grain effect, digital noise. Apparently one of the control boards deep inside the tv might have to be replaced, however with it also suffering from horizontal banding issues for a while now it's time for a replacement.
I've been looking at TVs and for 55" the price difference here is
LG 55" LED 55UJ6300 CAD 880
SONY XBR55X800E CAD 1300
SONY XBR55X900E CAD 2000
LG 55" OLED OLED55C7P CAD 2500
Now I can barely spot the difference between 720p and 1080p from the couch on my current 1080p (before the extra dither effect on top) so 55" seems a bit of a waste for 4K. I would be happy with a good new 55" 1080p tv yet the only 1080p tv nowadays seem pretty basic :/
For 65" it looks like this
LG 65" LED 65UJ6300 CAD 1466
SONY XBR65X850E CAD 2200
SONY XBR65X900E CAD 2800
LG 65" OLED OLED65C7P CAD 4000
SONY XBR65Z9D CAD 7000
On rtings.com the LG OLED scores very high naturally, 8.8 overall score, highest of all tested, beating out the Z9D. The 6300 rates pretty poorly. In store OLED looks great, yet it also has its own special show running while all the other tvs have the same material, ofcourse it stands out. They're all set too bright anyway to get any real feeling for differences.
I don't want to spend more than 2500 on a new tv, doubt I can get away with that much already but if it lasts 9 or 10 years again I have a convincing argument :) So as it looks now, either 55" OLED C7P or 65" LED 850E. Or wait until the 65" OLEDS go on sale, big sale... Or perhaps the 900E will go on sale which at least has local dimming which the 850E doesn't have.
Both the Sony and LG have disadvantages, Sony's image quality rapidly degrades at an angle, so sitting from behind my laptop it might not even look as good as my 1080p tv does now (even with the digital noise I can't see from here). While the LG still suffers from some image retention if the kids leave a game on for half a day plus it has ABL.
Any alternatives?
Anyone have any experience with Sony and LG tvs?
