Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Would the 3DS have sold more if launched as a $150 2DS XL in 2011?

How much would a 2DS XL have sold lifetime under this scenario?

Over 150 Million 5 8.62%

Over 130 Million 3 5.17%

Over 100 Million 14 24.14%

90 Million 24 41.38%

70 Million 4 6.90%

60 Million 1 1.72%

50 Million 3 5.17%

40 Million 0 0%

30 Million 0 0%

20 Million 4 6.90%

Total:58

So here's a thought. What if Nintendo launched the 2DS XL in 2011 for $150.00? How would that have effected sales of the system. What about the library? I think it would have done much better. IMO 3DS had a slow start due to the price and tiny screens.

Of course.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

No. It would have had the EXACT same sales.

Hmm... maybe. Although a lot remakes came to the 3DS and I think the 3D function really give a reason for them to be made and re-bought.

Really the New 3DS XL at $200 + New 2DS XL at $150 in 2011 would of been the best combination. The original 3DS hardware was quite bad even at the time.

I doubt you can make a profit at that price in 2011 but anyway the answer is easily yes. For a lot of people 3D was not worth the price hike.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

The 2DS XL would have been the only version at launch, and it would have had a different name than 2DS XL, that was less confusing than 3DS. A lot of people just thought the 3DS was a regular DS that played games in 3D.

I dont know much much more, but yes, quite a lot more if they never embraced the 3d

Probably, just based on the price.

Nintendo would have lost a boatload of money on this though.

specialk: Nintendo already lost a boatload of money by slashing the price to $170 just a few months after launch.

I pick 70 million, the 1st party software also had to be way better in the early going, and then maybe 90-100 million would have been doable. Of course, if they weren't focused on 3D, they might have launched with something different than Pilotwings and Steel Diver.
