There's no real other option. If North Korea attacks South Korea or Japan, should the US take the diplomacy course? Of course not, just flatten them.
I think he might have been referring to Kim Jong Un instead, but yeah.
I'd rather go with the solution where we don't blow up both sides of the Pacific.

he said "if it [the US] is forced to defend itself or it's allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy NK "
in the past the US felt 'forced to defend itself' from states that didn't attack them or their allies on multiple occasions (Iraq 2002, Afghanistan 2001, Panama 1989, Cambodia and Vietnam 1965, ..) , why is this one guaranteed to be different?
