Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sonic Team Aware of fan interest in Sonic Adventure 3, but doesn't want to take the series backward just to satisfy fans

Cough Sonic Mania Cough

Anyways, at this point going backwards for Sonic seems like the best thing you could ever do. You've went forwards with titles such as with Sonic Boom, ended up a failure. You've went back with Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania, ended up a success.

Infact Sonic Forces is basically going backwards with all old villians, characters, Classic Sonic and 2D levels.

To me, this seems so ironic when you constantly have to shill out the "classic sonic" character and gameplay every time you make a 3D iteration because you're too scared that focusing on one play style will result in negative reception and sales. You want to progress the series forward yet constantly have to try and appease every fan imaginable by playing the middle ground. Instead of making a focused entry and deciding once and for all what the series will be ... we have what are pretty much deviation entries. The past few years have had Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom(although i'm pretty sure this wasn't developed by Sonic team), and now Sonic Forces. Pretending like you're sticking to a strong main path when you're really just going from title to title trying to see what sticks...just lol.

Maybe I'm crazy, but it seems like his logic is really skewed on this one. He says that he doesn't want to take the series backwards just to satisfy fans, yet they just allowed Sonic Mania to be released, which did exactly that, it took the series back to it's roots in order to satisfy 2D Sonic fans

No.

Sonic Team has made it quite clear that "they" are not interested in returning to any past works. Sonic Mania was not developed by Sonic Team so their energy was not used for it. They also said in response to SA1/2 remakes, that they would rather put energy/resources to something new. They are always moving forward.

They didn't develop it, but the fact remains that they greenlit a project that takes the series backwards. Takashi Iizuka himself greenlit the game on the condition that the name be changed from Sonic Discovery to Sonic Mania.

Ultimately a rather large chuck of the 3D fanbase has been dissapointed by the more recent boost based 3D games and really want to see a return to Adventure style gameplay. If Sonic Team can satisfy the 2D Sonic fans by allowing Mania to be made, why not put together a Mania-like fan-based studio to develop Adventure 3 or Adventure 1 and 2 remakes in order to satisfy those fans?

because that would be a much more difficult and timely endeavor.

Its a dumb excuse but lets be real, they CANT do it, I think they realize after 06 that they just dont know to make the whole 3d camera thing really work. Have people played those SA games recently? I have, they aged terribly. IMHO they are not that good, and this is coming from someone who played each multiple times.

I can tell you dont know Sonic Team - The only Sonic games that matter are the ones that are developed by Sonic Team. The releas did not send backwards because Forces exist. He does not consider Mania part of hes series. Its has no influence on his series. Do you think Iizuka would ever allow somebody else to create a sequel to HIS series? The only reason Iizuka even let Mania happen is because has no passion for classic Sonic.

To sum to this up: Not a chance in hell Iizuka greenlights a fan Adventure anything game.

Just in general - No developer should ever create an environment in which fan projects are the norm.

Mania does have an influence on Forces though. Infinite shows up in Mania and ultimately transports classic Sonic from Mania into Forces.

If Sonic Team wanted too, they could totally ignore that and it wouldnt have any bearing on Forces at all. Good example - Megaman X5 was suppose to be last installment to the series which would have ZERO seal himself away untill he is purged of the maverick virus,  which would then go into the ZERO series. X series continued so a lot of back story had to rewritten for Zero series  to fit (The real X was suppose to be the antagonist of Zero 1, due to anger of losing Zero and Maverick wars still going strong he became jaded and bitter, buuuut Zero didn't die so nvm)  , but it also means the X series is being funneled into a set path. Things have to happen to fit with future successor. That is what I mean by influence. Mania is just another Boom to Sonic Team

Um, what? Just make a really good game, and give it the Sonic Adventure 3 title. It's not like they have to have 2001-era gameplay

Sonic is defined by his style of gameplay at the time, not a title.
