Forums - Gaming Discussion - Can one game still make a difference?

Those games will always be able to stand out from the never ending flood of average games.

Yes... it's just that the biggest games right now are third party. If COD went exclusive, you'd see just how much of an impact one game can have.

cod still is declining and I don't believe WWII will reverse this trend. People are more exited to Wolfenstein II.

Minecraft and GTAV are the newest kids on the block that I can think of.

Mario games are still must own on nintendo.
For me gt is one for ps.

Of course, it's still common. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds right now is making huge waves.

This definitely happens and BOTW is the most recent example. Others include Halo, Wii Sports, GTA III, Super Mario Bros. and Tetris (Game Boy).

I think it might be too late for Xbox One, though. Pokémon is the most dramatic example of a "rebirth", but Game Boy already had prior success - it had credibility. We've seen major attempts to "fix" ailing consoles before, and I don't think it can be done.  My favourite example would be Resident Evil 4 on GameCube.

I see people saying it won't happen anymore. Why not? There are examples everywhere in entertainment:

- Game of Thrones incited 2 million new HBO subscriptions in 2013.
- Harry Potter forced the NY Times to create a "Children's best sellers" so it would stop dominating the best sellers list.
- Iron Man set the stage for something like 15 more Marvel movies with interconnected storylines. (Not saying Iron Man did it alone, but can you imagine that outcome without the Robert Downey Jr. movies? Can you imagine Deadpool or Doctor Strange getting movies without The Avengers?)

I don't think this ever happens, or ever was a thing.
There have been single games that convince people to buy a console, but I don't think people bought the console just to play that one game.

Because you still buy other games later. And you know you will, at the time of your purchase.
If there's anyone who bought a system just for one game and never bought any other game for it, then yes. But I think that's extremely rare for gamers.

Mattel says Hi - but then again I am a little bit old-school

Edit: on a serious note I bought a Switch to play BotW despite having a WiiU because I wanted the best version of that game, I have of course went on to purchase other titles.

COD is in decline, sure. But it still outsells all other FPS with ease. Wolfenstein 2 won't be the exception. Another third party game that could move systems if it were exclusive is GTA. When it was PS2 exclusive, Gamecube and Xbox had no chance.
