I am quite sure if games like uncharted, the last of us and god of war from ps3 all had 1 on 1 releases on vita it would have been a much higher selling console.

Nintendo is all-aboard the switch when it comes to support and that is something Sony never managed to do, sure it had some good exclusives but the best exclusives where always just on their home consoles.

She can not. Sony really depedende from third parties to sell all their consoles. Vita did not have great success from third parties, as it had PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP. Then he chose to focus full time on PS4 and abandoned PSvita, handheld sales shrank and the console die. The PS4 succeeds and benefited greatly from this choice.

PSP was a success.

Vita was abandoned.

It is kind of funny, really. "People don't want to play home console games on a small screen," was definitely said a lot. Now it's, "wow, Skyrim on the go!"

The Vita experience was gimped, though. It wasn't the same as home consoles, it just tried to mimic them with completely different games. That aspect of the Vita was not a success.

The Switch as a concept has always been the future, of course. That home consoles would one day be the size of a phone has been speculated about for many years. Someone was going to do it as soon as technology allowed.

Thank, this is exactly it. The Vita actually never delivered on the promise of the home console experience on the go. It was all the 'little brother' version of home console games. PSP on the other hand had unique games - and look how much better it did. The 3DS might not sell that much.

The Switch actually can deliver this experience also only through tricks. It has no companion home console which is stronger. Nintendo designed the Switch so, that it outdoes the WiiU, so it is a step up from last gen. The mid gen release is helping that the power difference to PS4 and XB1 isn't that big. That's why I'm very interested if the Switch can hold up good sales after the release of the PS5. Maybe it has a big and unique library by then so it stays afloat. Changing the marketing mid-gen to the more portable experience. We'll see.

I'd love to hear a few examples of this. IMO the Gears of War franchise has always been mediocrity wrapped up in good graphics.

One of the best series of campaigns, "meta" humor before it was cool that was self-aware but not overly stupid, character arcs that work about as well as the PS3 Uncharted games but without the pretention, revolutionary cover system, fun unique weapons, cool character designs, best co-op experience, a great competitive community, and a revolutionary Horde mode?

...yep, definitely just graphix.

Yeah I'm going to join the chorus of Gears lovers here. Amazing series. A lot more than pretty graphics.

A lot of game developers rely on production values to sell their games. If the "wow" from production values gets removed (which happens when a game is made for a portable console), then there's commonly not much of a selling point left. The result is that mediocrity gets recognized as mediocrity which stands in stark contrast to the hype-driven home console software market. It is not coincidence that AAA third parties have a hard time being successful on portable consoles.

You have misspelled Uncharted

Also, the Vita lacked R2/L2/R3/L3. Difficult to emulate home console when you're missing four inputs.

When they invented a way to push a button and instantly suspend gameplay, the need for "portable style" games died.

*Pushes PS button on Vita*

*Game is suspended with no repercussion*

a mid-level success, started better, but was overwhelmed by DS after all. At first, everyone thought that Sony will crush Nintendo in the portable division. As the psp was more powerful than ds and had all third support. This is not the case. Nintendo has crushed all the competition in the dedicated portable market.

Everything is overwhelmed by DS except PS2. Comparing just about any console to the DS is going to make the other look like a failure by comparison. 80m+ units is a success.
