Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Be Honest: Why Do You Think Switch is a Sales Success Right Now?

As of right now, it is doing fine. However, I would not celebrate it as a great success yet. It'll undoubtly outsell the Wii U. But beyond that, I'm not confident in it until I've seen 2yrs of sales

Thinking that Switch will fail is actually an optimistic prediction from StarOcean's POV, because he desperately wants it to fail and would be disappointed if it succeeds.

Its really a combination of many things.Great console concept, excellent first party support, amazing marketing behind it, excellent indie support, and soon to be added:decent to good third party support.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

I think its an interesting device and makes the concept of portable/home console seem practical.

Perhaps most importantly, I think we're all glad to see Nintendo putting its focus on a single platform and they focused where they had the greatest success, portability. I was tired of buying a portable and home console just to play a few notable games on each platform.

But how long will the momentum last? I'm not sure it stay the sales beast some assume, but 2017 will be strong.

Well the topic title literally says, "Right Now" so I am not even beginning to speculate into the future. This topic is about today

Nintendo's Marketing, the fact that it's a hybrid device, and it's getting great games and there aren't 3 month droughts of good games.

1. The games It opened with Breath of the Wild, a 21st-century take on Zelda 1, and it was a revelation.  Splatoon 2 was a follow-up to Nintendo's first big new IP in a while, and it showed it had enough content to be a full sequel.  Super Mario Odyssey both hearkens back to beloved 3D Mario games and breaks new ground.  The indie games have been numerous and quite clever, filling up the line-up between big releases.  Like the man said, "Software sells hardware."

2. Good marketing There were no weird living room cubes full of kids.  There was no consumer confusion over what the Switch actually is.  The ads for it immediately tell viewers what the Switch is, what games it has, and why you should want it.  And those ads are ubiquitous.  Wii U ads would appear on commercial segments of kid-targeted cable networks, while those for the Switch are in much more mainstream venues.

3. Underserved audience The Switch is targeted at adults with stuff to do.  While it's wonderful to devote a whole evening to your current gaming fix, a lot of people either have to schedule such evenings carefully or accept being tired in the morning.  The Switch conforms to a busy lifestyle and lets you enjoy your favorite console experiences even if you're away from home and just have a few spare minutes.

There are many contributing factors:

1. The hardware itself is good. It's a console that can be played in three different modes with games that offer multiple control schemes. This allows the console to serve several different preferences for playstyles at once which consequently makes it a very attractive piece of hardware.

2. The console launched with a killer app. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is such a beast that it sells people on the console before they even know anything else about its software lineup. For the doubters, however, ...

3. ...the console received a second killer app two months after launch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe served as a great complement to Zelda, because with just two games Nintendo already ticked the boxes for epic single-player game and multiplayer hit for offline and online modes. But it doesn't stop here, because...

4. ...Switch has a carefully planned released schedule for first party games. Anytime a game comes out, there is already another one that isn't far off. This creates consumer confidence and motivates people to invest in the console. The side effect of this first party schedule and consumer confidence is...

5. ...that third parties work hard to get games on the system fast. In January Switch was doomed because it missed AAA third party games and had only ~80 games in total in development. This was only eight months ago. Since then the number of games in development has risen to over 300 and over 80 have already been released. Switch's game library is growing at a faster rate than any other console's in history. The result of all these game announcements is...

6. ...a positive news cycle that Switch rides on. There isn't a week without announcements for new Switch games. The consumer confidence that was already there is only getting stronger. In only eight months Switch has gone from massive doubts that there will be enough games to play to the realisation that there won't be a lack of games, maybe even that there will be too much to play.

Just like there is a death spiral for consoles, there's also a positive feedback loop. With reason 1 to 4 Nintendo laid excellent groundwork to achieve the latter.

This is a good post but I need one thing from you. I need you to point out the single most important factor in your opinion. I understand this may be tough and I think all of your points are excellent but I really need to know which one is the biggest contributor in your opinion.

1)  The hybrid concept

2) The line up of games seems more promising than any other Nintendo console in recent history.

3) The Marketing has been on point.

I'm going to admit that I thought the price point was gonna prevent it from succeeding at the beginning (mainly because I can't afford it myself).  But it looks like I was wrong.  It is gonna be interesting to see for how long it is gonna sustent the momentum.
