Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Be Honest: Why Do You Think Switch is a Sales Success Right Now?

Innovative concept. Good marketing. Stands out against samey competitors. Steady stream of excellent games.

The last part is the biggest, of course. I think Switch's year one line-up ranks among the best of all time.

Mr. Miyamoto sacrificed the world's last two-headed Amur Leopard on the altar of Mercury using the jewelled dagger of prosperity.

Nintendo staff, dressed in their finest designer suits, then bathed in the blood, and drinking as much as they were able.

ewwww. They bathed together?

Yes, the unsanitary things these executive types do for success.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I want to read all the comments but can't right now.
I can't speak for everyone else but for me it's the combination of sexy hardware, potential, familiarity (it looks just like a tablet) and great games.

I think it was Zelda hype, the sold-out effect, early adopters and maybe the merger with the portable Nintendo market.

It has done well so far, but i'm interested in seeing how it develops.

I was not intending to respond again because I did not want to appear to be bumping my own topic too much but I wanted to address this comment.

One of the many reasons I decided to create this thread was because I wanted to see if the reasons people listed for its current success are reasons that will potentially turn into longevity or if they are reasons that could see the populatiry burn out quickly. I am extremely interested in how the console develops. Especially since I love Nintendo and love seeing them this successful.

The only reason Switch is even relevant right now is because of the "Nintendo" name attached to it. It this were a MS system, it would not even see half of the sales its getting.

I'm sorry, but what kind of logic is this?

Definitely the console quality gaming in a handheld formfactor. The average consumer doesnt care about the lesser performance in handheld.

Local wireless multiplayer.

and I've never seen such hype surrounding a game, and to be a launch title on a new Nintendo console, hot damn.

Not really a launch title; it was a port.

a success? still too early to call it that. let's wait a year or two and then we'll see.

I have heard a lot of different reasons and it seems that after the latest Nintendo Direct, the newest reason being thrown around is because third party support is picking up.

3rd party support is almost meaningless to the success of a Nintendo system.  Nintendo console/handeld success ---> Third party support.  Never the other way around.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Top 10 best-selling Switch games this year will all be either directly from Nintendo, or starring Nintendo characters.

As for me, I think that the Switch has succeeded for two primary reasons:

1.  The concept of a home console that can be taken on the go is both simple and highly desirable.

2.  Nintendo's simply been on a tear this year when it comes to software, especially if you didn't own a Wii U and the retreads are new to you.  Both their quality and quantity of releases has been fantastic.  And they're already set to continue the streak into early 2018.

3.  Nintendo timed this perfectly for a nostalgia upswing.
