Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Super Mario Odyssey file size

You expect small file sizes for games with more simplistic cartoon graphics that aren't attempting to simulate the real world. This has always been the case with Nintendo's games across lots of different formats. I doubt there is any game with cartoon style visuals with a huge file size unless it has loads of fmv and very high quality multi-channel audio. It's more interesting to see how the games Skyrim and Doom will compare in size to other formats. Rayman Legends on Switch has a small file size by using heavy compression hence the long load times on Switch. Much smaller than most other formats but in the case of Mario Odyssey I don't think its an issue at all and doesn't mean the game has been cut-down or compromised in anyway. It was pretty much expected that Nintendo's own games would work with the limited storage of Switch but third party games and ports would be under more pressure. Same was true of wii u, wii and gamecube with Nintendo's own games being comparatively small.

Mario 64 was something like 8 megabytes in size and has a huge amount of content.

Ratchet and Clank on PS4 is over 26GB though. But that game is on another level compared to other cartoon game when visual fidelity is concerned.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

I think you misunderstood, I know why games end up having huge file sizes. But I think developers need to consider that a 50 GB+ download will cripple some of our bandwidths and I've avoided buying games at certain times because I did not want to pay for breaking my bandwidth limit.

I think developers are just fucking lazy now and don't know how to optimize code.  Its like they rush up to toilet while hurrying to pull their pants down to shotgun blast shit all over the toliet bowl and then proudly walking away without flushing or wiping their ass.

Apparently almost every game is released in beta now.  Consumers are just beta testers now.

If code is the issue then they are literally just copying and pasting pre-made code into a script without removing unneeded parts. Either that or they have code that is ten miles long for something as simple as "move the player forward". I've seen people take up seventy lines of code for just "shoot bullets".

"We have a variable called Y. Y controls the bullet speed, as well as the ammo count, and enemy health. We have a function called ammo count checker, that generates a list of ammo every frame, and spits out temporary variables called N and M. N then controls the speed of the bullet by running another function that is twenty lines long. M. controls the ammo count of the current gun, but not before putting itself into five different arrays that could just be a single array. I think I'm a smart coder because I found a complicated way to do this instead of just making seperate variables for bullet speed and ammo count. The boss now insists that all other coders have to use and reference my ridiculously complicated code. In order to prevent bugs they have to make their code stupidly complex or it won't work with my code. "

13 gb give or take

I was expecting 8-10 gb. Good work Nintendo

Nice that the file size isn't huge, but that pretty much makes it unlikely that the game will run 1080p in docked mode. Maybe it still could, though.

I'm hoping its still anywhere over 720p, cuz Super Mario 3d world is also 720p and no resolution improvments is fine but it'd be a nice treat :).

I wish other developers did the same especially on Steam.

Knack 2 is 36.5GB, while Mario is only a pathetic 5.7GB, more proof that Sony always wins!!!!!1!!!1!!!!

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Considering the size of other games with the same scope thats impressive.

Oops, nevermind.

Anyways, nice file size. Kind of disappointed though that the Switch only comes with like 24-26 gbs

This size has nothing to do with skills. They just don't use prerendered videos. Every game which uses it, is huge.

There's also Voice Acting, which includes a multitude of languages in most games. Nintendo games are normally light on cutscenes, therefore less VA. BotW is 13.7 GB and it has very few cutscenes.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.
