Forums - Sales Discussion - Why would Doom come to Switch?

I understand that Switch is doing very well and that some indie games have done better on it than all others platforms combined. The 2 indie games that have done so well on Switch are Nintendo-like games. One like 2d Mario and the other like Zelda. However, a game like Doom is likely doomed on Switch. I think Skyrim will underperform too. These are not kiddie type games. I like Sonic, so don't think I don't like any kiddie games or that I'm insulting anyone.

My point is that adult oriented games will almost certainly fail to succeed on Switch. Of course I could be wrong. We will see. I want to see how Dragon Ball Xenoverse sells on Switch worldwide. I know it has done well in Japan. I will watch these games and more. I predict failing sales.

If Switch does actually succeed in 3rd party games like these, it could be as big a hit or bigger than PS4 in America. I just dont see it happening long term, though. It already will beat PS4 in Japan as long as Nintendo, and 3rd parties, can keep rolling out a lot of games. Europe is PS4 country, though. Regardless of which one wins worldwide, it will be an exciting sales war!

The thing is the fans say they want 3rd party support, yet the majority don't buy them.

Lol Zelda is "kiddie" but DBZ is adult-oriented?

Dude.

Edit: also, Europe is apparently a country.

My christ I heard that call out like it was outside my window.

"You should be banned. Youre clearly flaming the president and even his brother who you know nothing about. Dont be such a partisan hack"

I cry a bit every time I see the world "kiddie" when talking about Nintendo games/gamers.

Skyrim is going to sell Very well on the Switch, just wait.
Doom will be greeted with positive sales and will make back at least twice what it costs to develop.
Code and expertise used in porting to the Switch will be reused in other projects, this is id Software playing with a new toy and Bethesda making a bit of extra pocket money.

This is a new platform and people need to test what will sell on it, if no big boy games come to the Switch early on, there is a chance big boys will think the Switch is a kiddie toy.
Bethesda may want to ensure that big boys buy the Switch to help push sales of their later games on the system.

We also don't know the arrangement with Nintendo. It could well be that Nintendo themselves have part financed these ports because they feel they need to get more games on the Switch. The fact Skyrim was announced before launch was clear Nintendo had paid for that content. That arrangement may have continued to these later titles. There may not be any financial gamble at all for Bethesda if they have been paid for their development costs.

My guess would be that Nintendo pretty much paid completely for Skyrim but with the successful launch of the Switch have dialed back the incentive somewhat and only partly assisted with development costs for these later games.

It's the first time I hear someone suggesting Skyrim is a moneyhat. It is kinda unlikely. Skyrim is the ideal port game to test the waters in an unknown market. It has proven to be popular (you don't want to port something niche, that probably doesn't bring back the investment), it is already ported to nearly anything and it might be more in line with the Nintendo-userbase than other Bethesda-titles.

That said, it is not impossible that Nintendo gave Bethesda some incentives. But for Skyrim I see that it might be ported without any incentive.

Doom and Wolfenstein are bigger risks. Maybe Nintendo was here more active. Also it surprises me, that Bethesda announces these ports without waiting for numbers from Skyrim.

That is the main reason 3rd-parties avoid Nintendo. But something changed with Switch. Switch being the best-selling platform for multiple Indie-games (although smaller userbase) and japanese 3rd-parties announcing successes for their test-games. So this time something is different. This all not necessarily means western 3rd-parties sell good too. But I'm awaiting numbers for Skyrim and FIFA. This will be interesting.

Todd Howard after demoing Switch.....

I love it. I got to play it. I will tell you -- well, maybe that's an NDA thing. One of the best demos I've ever seen. Probably the best demo I've ever seen.

When pressed on his use of the term "demo", he replied:

I mean the device itself. I think it's really smart what they're doing. We're definitely going to be supporting it. It's the first time we've done something on Nintendo. If you don't count the old NES stuff. Home Alone. Or Where's Waldo?

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

I wonder why people are surprised about the good third party support? The Switch is part handheld and Nintendo handhelds have always got great third party support. Third parties also never had any problems to sell their games on Nintendo handhelds and, frankly, whenever third parties put out high quality software on a Nintendo home console their games sold well. Couple this with the PS4 being the only other viable choice for developers right now and it should be clear that support for the Switch will only get better in the future.

So only two indie titles have done well on Switch? And there I thought things were going well for Nintendo...
