Forums - Gaming Discussion - Has there ever been a time where you lost interest in video games?

No, not entirely or anything close to that. There's been times it waned because of the lack of interesting games but that never lasted too long. Also, there's always a backlog to pick from when times are lean.

when i contracted a debilitating ilness

I wouldn't say I've ever *completely* lost interest in video games entirely, meaning there will usually be a game or two that I really like which I'll come back to on occasion even if I'm playing nothing else for a long period of time. But yeah, there actually have been frequent periods where I very rarely play games - particularly in the last decade or so I've gone through many days and even weeks where I'd maybe pick up a game or 2 for an hour and that's all. Part of it is I get easily frustrated when playing and often just want to relax and zonk out surfing the web or watching TV. But I think part of it too is that games at least for my money have overall gotten progressively worse over time.

Having severe depression has made me lost passion and enjoyment in most of what I consume, and that includes video games. I would say since 2012 I've slowly been losing interest in gaming. It didn't help that games like Halo 4, Gears Judgement, and especially Dark Souls 2 crushed my dreams. I have on and off periods with games. It is only as of the past few months that I've been getting "back into" video games. A lot of the time when I play games I get off track in my mind and have a hard time feeling absorbed in the game, or have very little enjoyment. I also think "Man, I could be doing something more worthwhile". I especially lose interest when I do super bad at a game, I can be so compulsive for no reason that I restart the game over and over again. I love games with challenge, but I hate myself for it.

So long story short yes, in fact i'd say most of the last 4 years that's been the case.

Currently this is one of the worst years. So yeah, losing interest fast. Doesnt look like things will change much either for the next 12 months.

I was like 90% out of it in the years of 2014-2015. Didn't get a next gen console until the August of 2016 (Xbox One S). Seeing things like Doom 2016, Forza Horizon 3, Pokemon Sun/Moon, and a lot more. The only game I recall actually buying in 2014-2015 was Farcry 4 for the Xbox 360. Idk, just didn't feel like playing games in those years. Nothing noteworthy came out those years for me. Anything I was looking forward to became a dissapointment. Ac unity, watchdogs, the crew, driveclub, you name it. Delayed my next-gen console purchase by a fair bit.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Often, when games I don't like become really popular. The release of Xillia and Xillia II, the gradual period leading up to the massive porting of otoge to the PSVita, the release of Bloodborne, the release of Overwatch, the release of LoL's updated lore and the release of Persona 5 were all moments my interest in gaming plummeted. I didn't withdraw completely, but I often didn't read gaming news or downloaded new games during those periods, and often played one or two games or went through my backlog. As someone who could buy any game whenever fancy struck me, that is very concerning to some extent.

Hypothetically, if MS leaves the game business and their PC stand in is discontinued, I will lose it altogether since there will be no alternatives where curation is a priority.

I think that happens to everyone. It certainly has, and continues to happen to me.

I played extensively from the time I was about 2 or 3, until I was about 13 (1993). Then I only played occasionally, no following of gaming news or anything, until I was about 25 (2005). From maybe 2005 to 2014 I played probably an average of maybe 5 hours per week, but I paid a fair amount of attention to the goings on in the industry. Since 2014, I think my average playtime is around 15-20 hours per week, and I spend several hours per week on sites like this one, discussing, reading, or otherwise thinking about gaming.

There are still weeks and months here and there where I don't play much. It really is all about the games. If there is something that pulls me in, I play. If not, I don't.

Sometimes I don't feel like playing any games but it usually doesn't last more than a week.

Same here.

I haven't ever lost interest in them but I did go extended periods of time without touching them due to wanting to focus on personal growth. Zelda Breath of the Wild was the first real game I'd played since well...I graduated from Highschool 3 years ago. But now that I feel a bit more confident in my work, I've set more time aside for gaming. And I gotta say, the Switch is really helping me do that.
