Forums - Sony Discussion - Media transfer to your PS3 (very newbie question)

Hi, little problem here, i would like to know if its possible to move AVI files to your Ps3.

Second, if first answer is positive

The two files are rather big (2.5 gigs the first one, 4.5 the second one), keep in mind i dont have an external hdd nor a usb key to transfer these, how can i manage?

Thank you for your time

Around the Network

If your computer and PS3 are connected to the same LAN, you could set up a media server on your computer. Files shared via the media server could be accessed on your PS3.

Ok here goes my newbness. I actually dont know if my ps3 is connected to the same LAN...does this have anything to do with the fact that it shares the same wifi connection?

Otherwise how would i set this up, and if ever im too much of an idiot to manage (which quite frankly is highly possible) how else could i get it done?

If you have a router and both your PS3 and your computer are connected to that router, then they are on the same network (LAN).

Ok well then i guess thats the case...so how do i set up the media center to transfer files?

If it shares the same wifi point its the same LAN. Nevertheless you may be better off with an external USB harddisc(fat32) . Fast forward etc. Just work better and media servers are a bit tricky. With new firmware the ps3 should be able to play divx,264 avis(most of them) even of that size

The first thing you need to do is install media server software to your computer. If you have Windows Media Player 11, I think that acts as a media server. If you don't have it, you can download free media server software here:

Once you install it, you have to configure it. There are some guides online that explain how to configure TVersity. Just google "TVersity PS3".

You also have to ensure that your PS3 has the latest firmware.

I kind of agree with Kyros though...media servers can be tricky to set up and configure to run smoothly. You might be better off with an external USB drive.

Also, you might be able to copy files from a burned DVD...not sure though. Can someone confirm this?

I just tried it with a DVD I burned to back up my laptop's hard drive and the PS3 recognized some of the media on it and allowed me to copy it. I'm not sure if it would work with one big file (my DVD has like 12000 files on it) but I think it would.

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

Yeah, do what Retrasado said. If you don't have an external HDD and you don't plan on moving a ton of files frequently, it may just be less of a headache for you to just copy them to a blank DVD and then copy them to your PS3 HDD from there. You could invest in a 4-8 gig flash drive too, or buy a cheap external HDD too.

You should be able to play any .avi now with the recent firmware update. I haven't tried it myself, but some of the files that used to not play (certain Divx and Xvid files) now play just fine.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S.
