Forums - Gaming Discussion - EA : Gaming will become access-based like Spotify and Netflix

Yeah, and kill the RPG and open world genres in the process

Streaming introduces input lag thats greater than what owning hardware does.

Shooters and the like are more sensitive to input lag, than rpgs.

So its not really rpg & open world genres that ll suffer the most from streaming.

Streaming + touch screen controls? Holy shit this sounds awful. It's obviously an attempt to court the "normies" out there - especially the ones who don't even have a game console - but I think even they will grow frustrated over the inevitable hiccups and limitations of this cheapie format.

The infrastructure it's not here yet, sorry. They have to solve a latency problem and a huge network problem, where everything, since their server until the cheap router inside everyone's home must actually work perfectly without skipping a beat. This is not like Netflix, where you have the video on a freaking buffer. A half-second interruption is perceptible. And even if everything is perfect, they need to have a lot of local servers in all the world, because physics are a real hard limit.

Off-topic: This is like VR, companies are trying to push a tech that is not ready yet and will simply get burned and cancel everything in a few years. If you don't believe me with VR, just wait. Our current resolutions are too low, we lack rendering power (can your PC power a 4K 120 hz game? That's still not enough) and our tracking tech is too primitive to avoid motion sickness. Companies will move to mobile AR and forget that VR exists.

Don't have much to add that hasn't already been said. I just agree that this sounds terrible.

"Right now if you want to play FIFA in the United States, it will cost you $460," Evenden said. "You have to buy the game; you have to buy the console. In a streaming world, it could be $9.99 a month. The commercial details have to be worked out, but whatever number it ends up at is very much less than $460. So that extends your market, because all you need locally is literally a smart TV."

He forgot to mention the fact that you need a controller.  A controller that can actually communicate with the TV or streaming device.  To my knowledge no controller does this besides the shitty controllers that are included with streamin devices.

Well that's nice, EA.

You also said fifteen years ago that franchises would become annual. And they did. For SOME games.

EA says a lot of things.  They think they are industry leaders just because they gobble up as much of the competition as they can.  If the industry wants to follow EA off the cliff then they can but I don't think EA will be much of a trail blazer.  Look at their EA Access shit.  Every once in a while I see people post about it for an unpcoming game but in the grand scheme of things most people don't really give a shit about their stupid EA access service.

Ofcourse EA doesn't care about game consoles. They don't sell one. I don't think Sony, MS, and Nintendo would agree. Pay $9.99 a month. For a few games I would play on the service. VS the $60 the one time. I'm picking the one time.

That's my main concern. And with Disney leaving Netflix, which might encourage other big brands to branch out, we might also be paying for multiple TV/movie streaming services.

This would only work if consoles become obsolete, and if multiple devs get on a fair agreement. I don't see it happening in the next 15 years.

That'd be a disaster, having different services for everything.

That's what's gonna happen at some point. All the companies around the world have thosunds of movies and shows to easily start up their own streaming. Basically end up turning into cable TV. Except you have to pay $5-8 for the channels.

Please, no. I want to actually OWN the games I buy so that is someday I want to play them again I can do so without having o fear things like expiring licenses or unsupported titles. These people then complain about piracy when they want to keep their games under every form of monetized [control].

My thoughts exactly. This will drive more people in that direction unfortunately.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

I do not like it. I will be retro for life then. The Lord willing I have health to play games for decades to come, I will stick to consoles. I am even considering buying NES and SNES mini if the stock goes up in 2018.
The more plastic the better.
Also, I like controlers, do not want to control games with my device....

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.
