Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Larger Internal Memory Switches possible?

With all the stuff about NBA 2K floating about I feel like offering a way to minimize the issue going forward.

We see plenty of memory size alterations on PS and XBox consoles (I am not sure if the Wii/DS/3DS had it), plus the Wii U. Could a Switch model come out later that has a larger hardrive and internal memory.

Downsizing and less expensive memory is constantly occuring, so could 2018 see the release of a larger memory Switch that could at least alleviate the problem.

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

Nintendo has a lot of wiggle room in terms of what they can do with switch SKUs and models. I think we will get a Switch Lite which ditches HD rumble or maybe a Switch Essential unit that ditches the dock and instead opts for a 64GB flash memory unit. Most flagship phones still use 64GB of flash so I don't think we'll be going above that for the Switch.

A Switch revision with more memory won't happen for awhile. The profit margins for the Switch I believe are not that high. We could see one in 2019 as by then the productions costs should be down enough to help make give more memory to the Switch.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

Costs should decrease a lot next year.
Both flash and RAM should be much cheaper this time next year.
I could see Nintendo making a improved model for the holiday period in 2018.

64GB storage, slimmer body, maybe a die shrink (though I don't think we will see that within two years of the base model).

They're probably waiting a good amount of time to do a revision, in that way if they want to upgrade the internal flash memory, it will cost a lot less.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I'm not sure why this would ever be a necessity. The Switch has an SD card slot so all you'd have to do is but a card. I bought a 256gb card for mine but it should support any size available.

I hope they can do like Sony did with the PS4 or Microsoft did with the 360 and patch in USB extension HDD support.

Like Nintendo cares. They will find any reason to make a revision. Nintnedo makes handheld revisions like Apple makes new phones.

Completely possible. Also, the NS does not use a hard drive, it uses flash memory like your phone does. However I doubt they will increase it any time soon.

There are massive flash shortages right now and that makes them hard to buy in bulk, even when you can the costs are quite a bit higher than last year (still ridiculously cheap compared to say 5 years ago and a small part of the bill of materials, but that adds up). Supposedly it is one of the reasons Nintendo is failing miserably with stock. 64GB chips are likely even worse due to the new iPhone.

Flash won't be easier to find and costs won't be decreasing on a large scale for at least a year according to the latest reports.

Bets:

1. If the Wii U sells closer to 10 million LTD by 1/3/2015 I win. If it sells closer to 9.5 million LTD by 1/3/2015 OfficerRaichu15 wins (winner gets 2 weeks of avatar control)--Lost.

There is a NAND shortage, I doubt we will get a larger capacity version anytime soon.

Nintendo could also release a cost-reduced version with less internal storage, users will have to rely on MicroSD cards more heavily, but I would personally be okay with that.

Is it possible? Certainly yes. The new iPhone is supposed to have up to 512GB of memory on top of being smaller than the previous plus/xl version.

It's up to Nintendo. I think they shouldn't tho. It would be better to simply bundle it with a cheaper Micro SD Card. But if the memory is cheap enough, I say yes... go for it and make 64GB/256GB/512GB models the standard.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won
