Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why is there no such thing as luxury gaming?

Playing video games IS luxury. Every bit of it.

Well, that is if you want to buy the games. That's one way emulators can be useful, people that don't have the money to drop on games can get an emulator and a whole bunch of ROMs.

Having the internet and computer to play illegal games on is a luxury lol.

It's still more affordable than buying the games!!

What you're describing just doesn't make sense. Gaming is an entertainment industry: The concept of a "luxury" product is meaningless. There is no such thing as "luxury movies" or "luxury music" or "luxury TV shows," because entertainment products, by virtue of not being necessities, are price elastic.

The kinds of video games that can be sold for $60 or less and still be profitable conform to hardware specifications that cost $500 at absolute most. If you want developers to make games for hardware that is significantly more powerful (and actually take advantage of that power,) you'd be paying hundreds, possibly even thousands of dollars for a single game, because the games would have higher development costs and a much smaller consumer base with which to recoup costs.

And even with those ridiculous prices, it still might not be profitable: When the price rises on price elastic products, total income decreases; there is really no economic incentive to make video game products that are so expensive. Additionally, since computing power runs on the law of diminishing returns, even consoles that cost thousands of dollars would only have marginal improvements over what is currently available at a mass market price, further reducing the appeal--even to crazy people who have thousands of dollars to throw away.

TLDR: The consumer base is too small and it wouldn't be profitable.

I constantly ask this question. Why can I buy a Walkman for $65 to $3,200, or a Bravia for $200 - $20,000, but with PlayStation I am stuck with a $300 Slim or a $400 Pro.

I would absolutely love to see PlayStation and Xbox models in the $1,000 - $1,500 range. I would like to see VR offered from $300 - $3000, and Contollers from $60 - $600.

Unfortunately, the console market is still looked at as a joke to the business class. Executives at the big three still see them as toys, and not as serious consumer electronics. Consoles should be the Smartbox of the Home, and Handhelds should have never even let Smartphones as we know them exsist, but Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo all failed to capitilize.

On the bright side, with Kazuo Hirai at the top of Sony, it appears that things are very slowly changing for PlayStation. PS4 Pro, PS VR, and PS Vue are all looking to expand PlayStation's value in the company, and change the image of the brand. We also have the Xbox One X pushing for slightly higher end boxes from Microsoft. My hope is that all of these we be successful, and push for more high end consoles, and broader OS's and features.

I know some don't really dig Ken Kutaragi, but he had an amazing vision. He wanted PlayStation to be the heart of all Sony electronics. PlayStation was supposed to be the digital hub of the home, and everything in your home was supposed to connect to your PlayStation. He even wanted PlayStations hardware to be scaleable so that it could be used in all of Sony's products to help streamline the expereince and connectivity between all Sony devices. I personally still share this dream, and hope that some day, my console, my phone, my camera, my car, and all of my other electronics can run in harmony via one unified OS and a Network connection.

Still advocating this nonsense, huh?

Let me ask you this: 1 in 5 PS4s sold are PS4 Pros That's far more than you could ever expect a $1500 PS4 to sell for, obviously. The PS4 Pro is rarely being supported by third-party developers beyond the bare minimum required of them, because it doesn't actually scale the way you pretend it does. Very few are putting in any effort to take advantage of the extra power in any meaningful way. Why in the fuck would you expect developers to put in more of an effort into a PS4 Money to Burn Edition?

They wouldn't. You keep living in lala Land and refusing to listen to reason, despite being informed repeatedly how nonsensical this all is.

P.S. Citation needed that Ken kutagari wanted to make Playstation hardware scalable.

I don't understand the need for multiple PS consoles myself, as PC gaming should already fill that niche.

There isn't any, and I say this as a PS4 Pro owner.

Because it's technology?

The iPhone is a premium phone and you pay a premium price for it. Some would even call it a "luxury phone" when they compare it to other new Androids in the market. People buy it for the streamlined user interface and efficiency of its exterior design.

Even if we look at car sales most data show that people are more interested in midrange cars. The Volkswagen group owns Bugatti and Lamborghini but most of the sales come from small Volkswagen cars. The f150 is the best selling truck in the US and most of its sales come from the XLT model (midrange).

Sony said that 1 in 5 of every PS4 sold is a Pro. Steam also has 120m active users but most of them don't own the top of the line PC hardware in the market. You might get the occasional special edition console for a bigger price than the regual hardware but the only luxury/premium (whatever you want to call it) that will stay on shelves all year round are the Pro/X1X because most customers are interested in paying extra for the hardware not a special edition with a picture on it.
