I don't qualify gamse like the new shantae as sprites tho.

The character models are still technically sprites, though, being 2D bitmaps. They're just extremely high-res and well-animated.

Yeah if we are picky they are. But for this discussion and in most peoples minds "sprites" are graphical elements with the limitations from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras.

The 16 bit era is my favorite - maybe I'm biased growing up as a kid during that time but that was the golden era for me. The graphics have a certain charm for me. But that said the retro (both 8 and 16 bit) revival thing, particularly with indies has kinda been done to death, to the point where even a fan of those type of graphics like myself is getting sick of seeing them. I'd love to see some more unique styles in the future. Doesn't necessarily have to be realistic - it can still be stylized and even simplified in its own way. The recent claymation Kirby game, and Cuphead's old 50's style animation are examples of this.

Even on home consoles, it often depends. In the case of Mario, the art style lends itself to high quality 3D models, and New SMB U is a 2D platformer with great 3D graphics.

That's a very odd opinon. I think Mario looks terrible in 2.5d, although i think it's more because of the art design than the 3D models.

And yeah, I'd prefer Metroid Samus Returns to be like Fusion
