Microsoft recently announced that their latest Mixed Reality headset will support some Steam VR titles a list that is expected to grow in the future. It wil obviously fully support the WIndows 10 ap store apps that were already built for Hololens and all future ones as well, but it is nice to see that they do intend to seriously support the gaming aspect as well, tapping into the pretty large Steam VR library (large for a VR platform that is).

But with this move MS proves that they are fairly flexible when it comes down to support rival software stores as well. They are fairly reluctant to release their own games on Steam (only very few W10/Xone exclusive titles make it to Steam) so this comes as a bit of a turnaround.

Its obvious that W10 is nowhere near the size of Steam when it comes to games, and they are probably noticing this as well. So IMO in the next year we will see MS slowly but surely embracing Steam as a partner platform and start seeing MS exclusive titles popping up on it, or maybe going as far as officially starting to support it and by this making a big U-turn. IMO this would be a great move by them and most deffinatly let their IP's shine even better in the PC sphere.

Do you agree? Will/should MS release their games on Steam? And if yes, when do you think that the switch will occur?

They've released games on Steam already. Whenever a company is not doing well they come up with new ideas. Wouldnt be bad to abandon the attempt of online play with Sony ans focus on crossplatform play with Steam.

If they release Halo 6 on Steam and Xbox with crosaplay, that will be huge. Same with PUBG

Probably not.

It would be great to free the games behind the awfulness that is the windows 10 store. But that would cut into their profits.

Probably just stream VR titles.

But why would it cut into their profits. W10 games are probably doing less then stellar numbers. The ports are hovering between good and awfull. If anything they would actually expose their games to a much larger userbase. Steam is pretty much the only viable PC store at the moment.

Those are not MS' mixed reality headsets. They are licensing the mixed reality platform. MS is not making headsets. If they want their mixed reality platform to succeed, MS will have to allow better connectivity then the competition. It's the embrace part of their usual strategy.

W10 they get full profits, no sharing. Probably also less discounts so more people paying full price.

They would have to have a much larger Steam userbase to offset the differences.

Would be interesting though.

To be honest, I agree that they can make more money by putting games on steam than locking them on windows store. Yes, steam will get 30% but I think that there will be way more people who will buy these games on steam.

Why?

The "play anywhere" thing is to try and build up their own store.
The only reason they would put everything on steam, is if they gave up.

I have a question why is steam so popular ?
I cant understand that

Microsoft still wants to grow the W10 store, though they need to fix the problems marring the service. What Microsoft can possibly do is release their games on W10 first and then release them on Steam months later when sales on the W10 store flatline.

They will sell SO MANY more copies on Steam.  the almost have to embrace it.

I don't think they will. MS is trying to sweeten the pot on win 10. They even went so far that they were willing to hurt xbox by making it's exclusive games playable on win 10.
