Forums - Nintendo Discussion - (Update) The difference between the Wii U and Switch libraries after 10 months on the market.

I never had a problem finding a game to play on my wii u at launch or many months after due to wii compatibility. Where as Switch is getting ports of wii u games the wii u just played wii games as is but cleaned up the image slightly with hdmi output.

As a wii u owner I still find the Switch library poor with only Mario Odyssey being of interest to me so far. The trouble is I have other systems and a large backlog of games to play. It makes it very difficult to get motivated to get a Switch. I need about 6 games I want to really justify its purchase and that still seems a long way off. Also as newer competing hardware comes out I may find that a more compelling use of my money.

In fairness to the Wii U, it's library would've been considerably different early on if Nintendo had cherry picked Wii projects to put on it, like say if they held off on Zelda: Skyward Sword or Super Mario Galaxy 2 and quickly repurposed Xenoblade 1.2 and launched on Wii U with enhanced graphics. Switch lineup becomes considerably less impressive when you remove BoTW and Mario Kart 8 which are Wii U games.

The fact is too, it's not like Nintendo didn't have any strategy for the 3DS and Wii U launches ... what basically happened is they got burned hard by the casual audience abandoning them quicker than Nintendo ever could have imagined.

New Super Mario Bros. sold 30 million copies on the Wii. Nintendo Land was a high quality mini-game collection using big name Nintendo IP ... released in 2009 something like that would've sold 15+ million copies. Like 5/7 top selling Wii games are mini-game compilations.

There was no reason to think these games wouldn't drive Wii U sales. It was the same shit in their mind that was selling the Wii, and keep in mind these decisions had to be made in 2010 or so, at least two years in advance, in 2010 the casual market still looked OK, iPhone gaming was only just starting to take off (Angry Birds only came out in late 2009) and iPad had just come out.

Same thing with 3DS ... it's not like they planned to have a poor launch ... the plan was that Nintendogs + Cats would sell a shit-ton to casuals, the same way it had on the DS (24 million copies). They did not forsee how fickle casual gamers were and how quickly they would be abandoned by them in favor of Apple/Samsung devices. They trusted that crowd and got burned hard.

Switch is way better than the Wii U. It took me 3 years to get a Wii U and I only play on Nintendo systems! I only have 6 games on the WIi U but 7 on the Switch despite me owning the Switch in a much shorter period.

Anyone who compares the Switch to the Wii U has no idea what they are talking about and should be ignored.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

I actually think the Wii U's launch line up wasn't that bad either, but the Switch's line up far outshines it. Quite a number of excellent quality games within its 1st year. Zelda, Mario Kart, Arms, Spla2n, and Mario Odyssey all in one year is just... crazy! If Xenoblade indeed comes out this year, that just makes the line up even better, and this is just counting some 1st party titles.

I decided to put to gether a table.

  Wii U Switch
Launch Window (2012Q4/2017Q1)

New Super Mario Bros U

Nintendo Land

ZombiU

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

1-2 Switch

Super Bomberman R

Second Quarter (2013Q1/2017Q2) LEGO City Undercover

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Arms

Minecraft

Third Quarter (2013Q2/2017Q3) New Super Luigi U

Splatoon 2

Mario + Rabbids

Pokken

Fourth Quarter (2013Q3/2017Q4

Pikmin 3

Rayman Legends

Disney Infinity

Super Mario Odyssey

Fire Emblem Warriors

Sonic Forces

Skyrim

Xenoblade 2 (?)

"Launch Window" basically means November and December of 2012 for the Wii U and March 2017 for the Switch. The Wii U games above all sold at least half a million at retail. Switch games hve either sold half a million or are likely to do so. Multiplatform games are in italics.

Long Story short, the Switch has the upper hand. The Wii U landscape was barren after launch until summer was well underway, whereas the Switch has had a constant stream of notable first party titles. And although the Wii U was meant to encourage third party support, it doesn't have a major lead in that category. The impact of ZombiU, Monster Hunter, Rayman, and Disney Infinity is roughly on par with Bomberman, Minecraft, Sonic, and Skyrim.

Good companies tend to right the ship after they screwed up. Nintendo after Wii U , Sony after ps3 launch and Microsoft after X1.

Sony and Microsoft fixed their products while they were still active ( x1 and ps3 were both totally different after a few years on the market) while Nintendo abandoned the Wii U ( I enjoyed it btw) for a better product and better support.

Bad hardware companies just screw up over and over until they throw in the towel ( sega, Atari)

It was really only solid in name, because ultimately most games weren't worth buying.

On topic: We are only six months after Switch launch day, not seven.

I definitely agree most games weren't worth buying but New Super Mario Bros. U alone made it better than PS4, XOne, or 3DS. Meanwhile, Vita had Wipeout 2048, which I would rank above anything that arrived on competing platforms.

Honestly, having a single great game at launch is enough to shine this generation.

Apparently 90% of the market didnt agree with you.  You know, seeing as they decided to go for the other options available.

Nah man, you're giving them too much credit. USFII probably outsold all those games, if not it will at some point (I'm only unsure about ZombiU, mostly because we never got official numbers).

If you mean impact as in value to the overall software library, then same story. Minecraft alone is worth much more than all those combined. Add Skyrim and there's no contest.

The Switch destroys the Wii U in every way imagined. Except supply

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

The good thing for Nintendo and first time Switch owners is that they have basically the entire WiiU library at the tips of their fingers, to fill out gaps in the release schedule.
That alone should last them around two years at least. By then 3rd parties should hopefully have jumped on board to fill in gaps and Nintendo will have heavy hitters like AC, Pokemon and Metroid coming.
It's all looking good so far.

If Rabbids sells well Ubisoft may just dedicate a branch to Nintendo the the rest of the Switch's lifetime. It could also make Sega and Atlus get really brave with releasing more SRPGs for the system, since that sort of thing is one of Atlus' specialties. Finally, all those AA devs from the 3DS need somewhere to go. Small AA games can now be launched for either PS4, or Switch for $40. That's become a standard thing for games like Kiwami, Lost Legacy, FF XII, and Rachet Remake.
