Forums - Gaming Discussion - I have lost most interest in RPG's. I used to look so forward to them. Here's why.

Have RPGs lost their magic?

Yes. 70 36.65%

No. 89 46.60%

See results. 32 16.75%

Total:191

There are still plenty of good RPG's that fit your tastes, they are just as what most would call Indie games, not your AAA blockbusters.

But yea, I feel you. If I want a new RPG to play and go to say Google and type "Best RPG's of 2017" or something. THe results shown have me going "I consider none of those RPG's" at least in the way I think RPG's are. Like only 10% of them are even remotely what I consider RPG.

Yep. Persona 5, SMT IV, SMT IV: Apocalypse, Etrian Odyssey II Untold, Etrian Odyssey IV, Fire Emblem 3DS games, Devil Survivor on 3DS, Bravely Default 1 & 2. Good JRPGs never really died. They just moved to portable systems.

What's the difference?

Says the Pokemon lover.

The Pokemon games are pretty meh though.

I love Pokemon mostly because of the anime

D: Ka-pi, I feel like there is still so much I don't know about you.

Also, I must say, for being a NiceGuyGamePlayer, you do seem to get worked up pretty frequently

Play Divitiny: Original Sin. The battles aren't random (though there's a few exceptions), but it's the best turn based RPG I've played in many years

Exactly and a sequel is coming along pretty soon I believe the early access for Divinity original sin II is already available on Steam.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

With open world rpgs like Skyrim, Fallout, etc. Jrpgs just can't complete. They'll sell well in Japan but outside of Japan they don't anymore. The lineal paths and lack of choices have hurt jrpgs

This is the thread that should make you think about your irrational hatred towards Nintendo. Turn-based JRPGs have been and are still made in high quantities, so the only thing stopping you is your misguided platform preference. And now that Switch is here - the console that will absorb the third party support of the 3DS and Vita - all those JRPGs will be perfectly playable on a TV, so the "boo to handhelds" excuse doesn't hold any water anymore.

Whoa there Rol. You don't want to hit people with too much pure truth at once. Else their faces might melt.

This gen I've been more into W/JRPGs than ever before by quite a bit. Never played a game like Witcher 3 before, or like FFXII, or Bloodborne, Horizon, etc.

My main gripe is that they're generally too long. I don't really have the time to be putting 80+ hours into a single game when there's more I want to enjoy.

One other thing I'm curious or interested in would be pixel based RPGs that were so common in the PS1 days. I would love to play a Sprite based modern equivalent to something like legend of dragoon.

Yeah there's a trend of artificially lengthening the games with busywork. The best games are almost chore free, but a lot of them just overstay their welcome for 10 to 20 hours.

When an iOS FF (Brave Exvius) is better than a mainline, console FF (FF 15), something is wrong.
