Crackdown 3 Should Have Been Announced Later, Microsoft States

It would've been better to hold off on announcing the game until much later.

Crackdown 3 was announced way back in 2014, only a few months after the Xbox One was released. However, just recently, the game was delayed until Spring 2018. Now, Microsoft says that it made a mistake in announcing the game as early as it did.

In an interview with Polygon, Microsoft Studios Publishing general manager Shannon Loftis said that, in her opinion, the game was announced prematurely. She remarked that it's been more difficult than anticipated to get Crackdown 3's three game modes up to high quality.

"We definitely underestimated the challenge of making sure the quality bar of all three of those modes was high and it delivers on what we need to deliver on," she explained. "So we had to take the extra time [and] make sure that we're delivering the game the Crackdown fans want. It was a super hard decision to do that, and it was made harder because we announced the game."

Crackdown 3's situation is something that Microsoft will learn from, Loftis said. It's not the only game that she believes Microsoft announced too soon, so the company needs to get better in the future.

"I think in the past we have made the mistake of announcing some exclusives a little bit too early," she stated. "We're trying to learn from that mistake and do better, so we have a bit that's in development now that we're not talking about. We're in this for the long haul, and we want to make sure that not just in the spring of 2018, but in the summer, and in the fall, and the spring of 2019 that we'll have great, unique, fun experiences for Xbox gamers."

Woah! This game is going on 4 years since announcement!

I agree, but I think in an alternate universe where Microsoft announced it later, it'd still be too early. Like e3 2016. That'd still be almost a 2 year wait. And I don't think a corporation has so much restraint.

Maybe they should have announced the game when they were sure it was ready. Or maybe something went horribly wrong in the development process that they are pretending never happened.

.- -... -.-. -..

And yet, despite realizing this, you still went out at E3 this year and gave it a release date you knew damn well it wasn't going to hit. So despite understanding the fact that jumping the gun gets you nowhere, and ultimately just makes you look bad, you still kept doing it. Bravo

Please... they just exposed how bad their first party development time table is. There's no need for bullshit lines. That game was expected in 2016 which means the development timetable was around four years more posisjbly more. horizon zero dawn took five years and crackdown is nowhere on that game or breath of the wilds level. You're closing in on five years Microsoft. This isn't about learning how to keep your mouth shut microsoft. This is about learning how to develop on a world class level.

if they didn't announce crackdown in 2014 people would've expected that they weren't going to have much sooner.

How do you know that? They could have very well planned it to release this year but about 3 weeks ago realized they needed more time.

Yeah, no f***ing kidding. Stop doing it.

Now I'd like for Sony to go on record and say some of their projects were announced a bit prematurely as well.

Crackdown 3 is a very ambitious game on the multiplayer side. No other game has every released something like it. Of course I believe MS should have waited to announce it much sooner but comparing it to Horizon isn't really a fair comparison. Both are very different games. MS knows if they fuck up with the multiplayer they will be eating their words for years. It can't be, "good enough". It has to work like they advertised.

I dont mind games taking whatever amount of years in the development cycle.

What pisses me off is announcing release dates out of the ass.

Sony also has this habit of announcing games 2-3 years before release. 7 years in TLG's case.
