Forums - Sales Discussion - The state of digital sales on Playstation

Hey guys for long we have discussed about digital sales and digital attach ratios...

So here we have a good interview by Sony that gives us 2 very good piece of info.

1) PSN Store sells 40% of all games on PS4

2) Almost 1/3 (26,9%) of all Horizon Zero Dawn were digital copies (915k of 3.4M).

PS: another 2 good points.. never doubt Nintendo and Sony will expand their IP offerings to get bigger userbase.

Yeah I feel like the world is moving into digital. At the beginning of the Gen I was totally against buying game online. Almost 4 years later, I dont want to buy disks anymore.

Well, I don't have a lot of choice when it comes to psvr games. Out of 45 games, I only have 5 physical PSVR games. Plus having a headset on is one or rather 2 more steps to change a disc. Yet GT Sport, Skyrim VR and Doom VFR will all be physical, as long as they get a physical release... Obduction apparently doesn't :(

I find it so much easier to buy on the store and just have the games ready to go on the system itself, I've often found myself put off playing games on my shelf because it's just easier for me to play games I have on the system, lazy I know. If I think about it, the majority of games I've played on the PS4 have been store bought. Still buy the odd retail copy of a game if it means that much to me, or if it's there and cheap enough, like recently I bought Star Ocean for a tenner and Final Fantasy XII steelcase edition.

Playstation gaming for 18 years this 2012

So, it's 40% of all games. I wonder how much it is of all games that get a physical release though. In any case, unless something drastic changes in my psyche, I'm going to stay physical.

that's great news, welcome to the future for those who have the internet infrastructure :)

the day consoles lose physical discs/boxes I will just exclusively play on pc.

My main drive is to own a collection on consoles ^^
but still good for sony because they make a ton of money on digital sales

Amen, I never want to be burdened with going to the store or keeing track of a disc again.

I think it is also better for the devs who don't have to lose money on shipping/retailers cuts.

Well on that you can look at HZD... something between 1/4 and 1/3 of retail games are sold digitally. And of course 100% of digital only is sold digital. If that put digital sales at 40% of total sales (that probably includes DLC and the likes)... I would say that retail still represents more than 2/3 of games sold, maybe even 4/5.
