I agree with that too... so... that doesnt really change the fact that you could make your own version of something if you are talented and knowledgeable

I don't think anyone is saying a person can't create their own version but if a person doesn't understand and appreciate the source material they are using for their recreation in the first place then they'll just pervert it or twist it even if they use good actors in it or have a large budget. It's like a slap to the face to the fans and original creattor(s) when people do that. I'm fine with people using a popular IP to make some money but they can do it in a way that's appreciative of it and pays homage to it. If they don't then it seems they're just using the IP in name only to make a buck or using it to spead some message.

Yep I don't disagree with that. I was just adressing the part where the person literally said

"Not surprising. When directors/writers/producers set off to make their own version of an established frachise, things always end in disaster."

Which I don't think is fair, as long as it respects and understands the source material. Anyways, i'm not defending this piece of trash movie.

Also, have you seen SPEC 2?  Watching Erika play a rude, awkward, and unkempt detective-savant was pretty amazing.  One of my favorite series ever.

No I haven't, but I'll check it out if I get the chance, I d like Toda and it'd be interesting to see her play a character totally different from Misa.

This probably also needed more Kenichi Matsuyama. He was awesome as L.

Indeed he was, I really liked his take on the character. Takeshi Kaga was great as Light's Dad also.

I don't get this?

Many live action adaptations tried too hard to be what they aren't. Dragonball Evolutions, Street fighter, and many other games with movie(s) tend to not have what makes their franchise special.

No one said this had to be a copy of the source. No one cares if L is black or if Misa is slightly smarter. The dramatic changes however turn it into a forgettable and awful movie.

We don't need action scenes, explosions, and romance in every movie we see.

I do care if the characters aren't based on the source material because that tells me that the people doing that adaptation don't respect the material. Same thing happened with The Dark Tower.

Since the original Death Note directors likes this new adaption, then critics might be over critical and not looking at this film as a retelling of the story.

If they wanted to retell I just wish they changed character name from L and Light. I can't shake the original anime depictions when I look at Netflix one.

I don't think they'd get this much backlash if the show was a spinoff instead of some alternate(?) western version of Death Note. I mean come on, they casted that guy from WatchDogs 2 to be L, a edgy stoner dude to play Light, changed the entire story direction, of course they'd be met with some very harsh criticism.

In other hand, the Death Note anime adaptation is pretty amazing.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

This whole thing just seems to be trying way too hard, from Light's emo boy band look, to the over the top action, to the excessive edginess. It comes off really forced and tacky.

I watched it on netflix twice today. I like it.

It doesn't follow the manga or the anime point for point, but it is a good retelling of the story, and I see why the original DN directors like it.
