Not in the least surprising, the trailer made it look awful, and Western remakes of Asian media generally tend to be crap.

Still, a shame. I loved the Japanese live action films.

I don't even understand how they could mess it up this much. They have a manga, anime, and Japanese live action film series to take reference from, and clear evidence that the series is already easily digestible by a western audience. It should have been average at worst.

It should have been easy to get right, I agree, but I never underestimate the ability of Hollywood/Netflix/etc to mangle foreign media adaptions. I think the problem is that they deeply underestimate the ability of Western audiences to enjoy media from other cultures, try to make it more Western, and as a result miss the point of the original.

I remember the dude behind this saying they wanted to make it darker or deeper and well look how that turned out lol. You CANNOT one up original content when it's already being praised a masterpiece.

truth is that this movie is more edgy than dark...

The show is dark enough as it is. Think about it. Seventeen year old genius is actually a psychopath who kills hundreds of people with ease, his father threatens to kill him as a test, a woman was tricked into giving her name and killed herself - it goes on.

It's disgusting how Hollywood acts as though we will all turn into xenophobes and ignore anything which isn't another shitty, edgy movie with loads of action and romance. Naruto, Dragonball, Death Note, and so many other shows are loved in the West. This movie should've been good at the worst.

You have to feel sorry for them. I mean, just how do you make an internationally popular series internationally popular? We might never know.

Of course it was bound to be bad. It is a Western live adaptation of a Japanese anime... Duh.

The Light guy looks cute though, only reason I kept watching the trailer instead of dropping out right away.

Then explain Scarface to me

I don't get this?

Better then expected! Surprised it scored so high.

I checked out when I saw the casting picks... why not pick actual teenagers to play highschoolers?

what a clusterfuck this ended up to be. fuck them for actually tainting the Death Note name...

As Pokoko so eloquenrly put it, this needed more Erika Toda

This probably also needed more Kenichi Matsuyama. He was awesome as L.
