Forums - Gaming Discussion - What was the last new gaming franchise you tried and why?

So we all have our favorite series that we buy almost every new entry but what about when you decide to jump in on the latest entry of an ongoing series?

Not including new IPs what was the last new series you tried? What made you want to try it? Did it make you want to go back and play previous entries.

For me the last new series I tried was Wolfenstein the New Order. I remember enjoying a demo I played of it at PAX a few years ago and it was on sale for $5 on PSN. Also now seems like as good a time as every to kick the shit out of Nazis.

Disgaea 5. Jumped into the series with this title, since I heard the story doesn't really link across games, and it seemed like a good Switch title to get.

I played about five hours...and while I never really felt lost in the story (I liked the unique tone), I felt like the game decided to throw a ton of mechanics at me very quickly, and I keep struggling to finish fights efficiently. I suppose this gets better as time goes on...but my initial impressions are that this wouldn't be as big a problem if I was more familiar with the franchise.

Not really into it enough to try out older titles...but I'd like to keep pushing to finish this one. We'll see.

Yakuza. I just needed something to play on PS4 and over the years heard so much good stuff. I finally dove in because it was a prequel. Boy, I wish I played this series earlier. I have Kiwami pre-ordered and pre-ordered that CE of Yakuza 6.

Horizon zero dawn.

looked incredivly beautiful.

But now I'm playing other games

ARMS
Because it feels like it is something that i never played anything that looks like that before.
New franchises that look like something I already played i usually dont get into.

Nioh because it was Souls-esque. Great game.

Wow, I have played nothing but sequels this year basically, how embarrasing.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Series-wise, I guess the Telltale games series with The Wolf Among Us on PS4. Tried it because the premise seemed interesting and I liked the art style and character designs. Was really fun, I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the sequel :)

Before that was Disgaea with Disgaea 5 Complete for the Switch. Tried it because I really like SRPGs, and it seemed like a good fit for my new Switch at the time (I imported a digital copy from Japan near launch). It's a quirky & fun game, I usually enjoy SRPGs and I'm definitely interested in trying earlier entries in the series.

Trust me, it's like that for every game in the series, there's just so much to learn in the game, and they always throw something new at you before you've had a proper chance to understand the last thing they threw at you, it's a VERY overwhelming series to get into, but if you manage to brave through it and spend time figuring out all the mechanics and features and stuff, you'll find that they're absolutely brilliant games. They're definitely games that require a lot of time and investment in order to fully enjoy them, that's for sure.

Ah...good to know it's not just me then :P

I shouldn't be so picky with tutorials, but I hate when a game throws a bunch of info and me expects to get it all. It usually just means I miss out on some interesting mechanics until half way into the game. I'll need to just slow down on this one and experiment a bit...it does feel like it would be really rewarding once I get the hang of it. Too bad my attention span is so...

Splatoon 2 just a month ago. Liked, what I saw from Splatoon 1, but I just didn't want to get a wii u just for that.

Edit: yay, it's my 500th post!

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.
