Hmm, there's one thing that comes to mind for me, and that's never playing it on easy, haha.

Only two things come to mind:
-I always play on default difficulty on the first playthrough.
-If there are multiple playable characters, I always play as the "main" character in the first playthrough (I would never choose Bass first in Mega Man 10, or Knuckles in Sonic Mania for example.)
"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Yeah, I said I never play it on the hardest difficulty, but I also never play it on easy too, I don't want my games to be too difficult, but I don't want to be able to breeze through them without any problems whatsoever either... |
For some reason, as a kid, playing a game on easy just seemed like a bad thing to do. It always had some sort of negative stigma attached to it, like you're a newbie or just bad at games.

Don't watch a review from certain sites... Or any site, really. Not until you've beaten it. All they're gonna do is spoil the game or tell you why it sucks.
If it's a game you already bought or plan on buying, don't worry about anyone else's opinion.
I never play by the rules or go where the game wants me to go. I never try to stay alive either, better to find out first what the death penalty is.
Never play on a difficulty other than normal the first time. Most of the time I play games for the story, If i want the platinum or want a challenge I'll play a second time.
