MS: I want to become friends with you sony.

Sony : I hate you.

More like...

MS: I want people to believe that I want to be your friend because that's how you win the PR battle these days.

Sony: I know. Do your worst.

Well, it seems more clear that crossplay isn't gonna be happening between Sony and the other companies.

Been obvious from when they first denied it.

I was hoping they would change their stance on this, but if this is the side they're going to take, then I feel disappointed with this company.

Exactly.

It's also smoke and mirrors to make you not notice that the new $500 machine that was suppose to be the end all be all 4k machine can only play this game at 1080p60 or 1440p30.  But cross play...that's the important issue, yeah.  LOL.

1.)  Considering the game we're talking about is ARK, taking aim at the console when said game isn't well-optimized to begin with is not a smart idea.

2.)  4K texture pack update will be released for Xbox One X.  http://www.inquisitr.com/4439587/ark-survival-evolved-xbox-one-x-version-getting-1440p-resolution-option-dropping-tether/

1) Basing comment on their published statements

2) 4k texture is not 4k resolution...not even close.

Be interesting to see Sony's response to EA, Activision and R* wanting cross platform play.

They most likely already know. And they don't really need it, maybe.

I mean are you directly affected? Do you play multiplatform mp games that would benefit from this?

It definitely sucks though.

Well, I met up with a friend a little while ago who plays Rocket League and recommended it me, and with it being cross playable, if I'll be able to play in a match with him on my Switch, it definitely makes me more interested in playing the game.

Why does it matter? If you want to play Ark with your buddies who have Xbox One's but you have a PS4, maybe you should have bought a Xbox or bought both.

But its not though.

It is though.  But I could have reworded it better as Last Gen is pretty much dead.

Xbox One. - 30~ million consoles.
Playstation 4. - 60~ million consoles.
That's 90~ million consoles all up.

Guess how many active users Steam has? ;)

Sony doesnt see PC as a direct competitor. This much is pretty obvious since they have no issue with cross play with PC, support games that have PC versions (SF5, Shenmue 3 recently) and have even personally published their digital title, Helldivers, on Steam. They also have PSNow available on PC.

Of course Sony sees the PC as a competitor. There are gamers on PC that Sony is trying to bring over to Playstation with their wallets.
And Steam can take users away from console platforms as well, why do you think the Playstation 4 Pro and Xbox One X was invented? To narrow the stupidly large graphics superiority that the PC had that gave PC significant growth during the latter half of a generation.

Actually PSN has more MAU than steam or Microsoft. And as of 2013, PSN had over 110 million users. That was 4 years ago. As of 2015, steam had 125 million users which was 2 years ago.

In 2013 the Playstation 3 was still being played heavily. Skip 4 years and that console is well and truly in decline and so has it's multiplayer populations.

You need to remember that Valve and Sony calculate their "active users" differently. In Valves case a user needs to have purchased a game... In Sony's, it just needs to be any random account, could be a 2nd, 3rd account on the one console... And have simply logged in. The log-in could be as simple as someone joining a split-screen game.

Chalk and cheese.

PSN is roughly the size of steam on its own, definitely over if you throw xbl into the mix.

There are counts that are placing Steam at 180-200~ million active accounts.
That is... Accounts that own at-least 1 game.

I know JEMC in the PC thread reported on it some months back.

I can boot my PS3 up right now and go find a match of call of duty BO2.

Black Ops 2 is one of the best selling games of all time and has an almost fanatical fanbase that is sticking around playing. So probably not the best of examples you could use.

aLkaLiNE said:

the quality of a game will go a lot farther in player retention than cross play play will

I completely agree, don't get me wrong. But if you think Crossplay is insignificant to long term multiplayer populations, then you are seriously mistaken.

So on that note, why doesn't Microsoft allow cross play between Windows store and steam?

Because Microsoft is an asshole and I have already given a ton of criticism towards Microsoft for this garbage as recently as Halo Wars, the Windows 10 servers are a barren wasteland. Same issue occured with Gears of War 4.
I think you are still under some strange assumption that I am Pro-Microsoft or something. The moving of the goal post won't work in that regard though.

aLkaLiNE said:

It was not my intention to frame you as an Xbox fan. I was speaking generally based on feedback from here and GAF. With that being said, I believe you are partial to Microsoft based on your past comments but your platform of choice is PC. Is that wrong?

I am partial to Valve. Not Microsoft.
If I could I would be running Linux and having everything running in Wine. But life is never so simple.

I do own Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony consoles, but my primary platform is the PC.

Apparently, Microsoft doesn't think that way, or they'd also have to keep it off of the Vita, Switch, and whatever you can buy/play it on. Like I said, it's a form of business suicide, given how massive the IP is and the fact that it's already been on multiple platforms. Totally different from other IPs like Gears or Halo.

Minecrafts success is due in part to how many platforms it is available on and how Youtube got behind it during Minecraft's early days which essentially provided free advertising for the game.

Heck... I bought it on PC. - And gifted multiple copies to friends.
Bought it on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Xbox One, Android, Windows Phone... And will probably grab it on Playstation 4 and Switch at some point.

It's a shame I just couldn't "Buy once" and play everywhere. Haha

It makes me wonder how massively Minecraft 2 will blow up if it ever happens.

ArchangelMadzz said:

Exactly. Always said since they bought minecraft (2 billion wow) that they'll keep it on all platforms but if they made a Minecraft 2 that would be exclusive.

Boy would that be a massive internet shit storm if Minecraft 2 was exclusive.
I don't think they would go down that potential PR Nightmare though.

It's running at 1440P and a mediocre 30fps.

Also... They "might" provide you with an option to go the 1080P 60fps route, but the graphics quality is only going to be PC-Medium equivalent. Ouch.
1440P isn't that demanding.

Just because Sony wants PC gamers in their ecosystem doesnt mean PC is a direct competitor.

Getting PC gamers to choose a PS4 over an X1 is what they want. X1 and MS are their competitiors. XB/ MS are generally seen as closer to PC. Even if the gap is to be closer to PC its about making the jump from PC to PS4Pro easier for a PC gamer to make over PC to the much weaker X1. And that is really what it is.

Still, as I said, they support PS4/ PC releases, have published on PC, support cross play between their hardware and PC, and have pushed PS Now on PC.

"PC isn't a competitor".

But then you state that Sony is competiting with PC to grab some of their gamers/wallets/marketshare so they don't go over to Xbox?
Okay then. Can't fault that logic.

Such a great move by MS. They literally don't have to do anything now but say they would like crossplay with their biggest competitor with each and every MP game this gen to siphon brownie points away from said competitor. Dunno if that will ever translate into sales, but still a very good chess move.

I was thinking the same thing, I been seeing more articles pop up lately on the subject and really curious if all that many people care. Either way it's a good way to throw shade with actaully doing it themselves right now but I think when developers start getting in on it that dosen't seem like a smart move for them like hey lets insult the lead platform we are on...
