Having the classic colors on both sides seems wrong to me, left side should have been all dark grey/black, or gone the extra mile and redesigned the left side to look like a dpad, just not physically connected into a dpad.

They can't make the left side into a D-pad because it's also supposed to be used as a fully functional pad. Which means those directional buttons need to stay the same as the function buttons so they can be used as such.

Which is an issue with the original design that has been addressed by color coding them in this design. Though now that I mention it, the colors on the left one should be reversed so they're the same order as on the left when used as a single pad. Which means this design is even more confusing. Oh god.

Well luckly all the buttons can just be placed were ever you want them to go, you can use the colored or non colored were you want. If you notice in the video the guy put the blue d-pad button on top instead of on the bottom so it was symetrical when the JoyCons were facing up side by side.
