Forums - Sales Discussion - 3DS could be outselling Xbox One rest of this year

+Latest financials put 3DS at 67 million shipped, meaning its likely well past 65 million sold to consumers. Earlier in January, 65 million 3DS shipped and around 63.5 million sold per VGC. Meanwhile, VGC estimates put around 2 million Xbox One sold this calendar year. So the two are likely pretty close at a global level of sales

+Latest July NPD put the 3DS ahead of Xbox One.

+XB1X of course arrives later this year, but its uncertain if it will significantly stimulate overall XB1 sales much higher than if XB1X didn't exist. There's a possiblity of XB1X being a niche product - whereas the 3DS has proven in the past to sell great during holidays, especially when offered at a steep discount and with and a new Pokemon game.

+Opinion: Going into holiday 2017 3DS 1st party > Xbox One 1st party.  Both in sales and quality. Just a trend that I think tilts in 3DS's favor for the rest of the year for hardware sales.

+XB1 has lost price advantage it once had to the PS4 - meaning the major 3rd party releases that would otherwise push X1 hardware now favor PS4's overall advantage even more

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Yeah it's possible and who could have imagine this in 2017. Even as a possibility. It's a combination of 3DS impressively hanging in there late in its life and XB1 massively under performing.

It's certainly possible. In all likelihood, the 3DS is already ahead up to this point in the year. It shipped 1.78 million worldwide from January to June, while the Xbox One sold 989k in the US over that period. It's not a stretch to think that less than 1.78 million Xbox Ones were sold worldwide, since that would be a 55.56% ratio of US/WW, while VGChartz has a 56.57% ratio. If VGChartz is correct, or if the ratio is even more in favor of the US, then the Xbox One is behind the 3DS for the year.

According to VGChartz's ratio, Xbox One sales should be 1.75 million for the year as of the end of June. It's currently overtracking Xbox One in the US by a pretty large amount.

I still think the 3DS beating Xbox is a fluke this month. Also the numbers for 2017 so far is 2 million for Xbox and 1.5 million for 3DS. It has a lot of units to catch up.

However it can still catch up. VGC numbers are a bit behind and I think adjustments still need to be made.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

Well, I contributed to an Xbox One sale today, so that's one less that the Xbox One has to sell to close the gap!!

I have never seen a console fail so hard when it's technically not failing as weirdly as Xbox One has. Seemingly has sold 30 million units but also stagnating from the lack of exclusives. The switch comes mid gen and steals more market from it. MS is acting like they don't care and think the solution is an even more expensive system but still the lack of exclusives.

It's certainly possible, but not very likely. XOne hasn't got many big games this year so far, but it will have a decent holiday period (FIFA, COD, Destiny...). 3DS on the other hand will only be getting Metroid and Pokémon.

The thing that's hurting Microsoft is the lack of a clear plan (at least in the eyes of te public). They want to concentrate their effords on W10 gaming, while also wanting to keep the XBox sales and specially the XBox Live subscriptions. Taking into account they were already losing ground hard against PS and that they don't have that many exclusivesin the works, and the XBox brand has a massive problem. Nintendo at least was very clear, even when they first unveiled their mobile plans, they inmediately followed up with the NX announcement, to tell the public they were still in the console bussiness. The XBox One X seems like a temporal patch rather than an actual solution to MS's problems.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

MS has learned the wrong lessons from the failure of the og Xbone. They think PS4 won because "moar powar", so they figure they can get the mainstream back by making the "most powaful console ever made", but powa wasn't the only reason they lost.

The problem I fear at MS is that higher ups don't care about traditional console gaming anymore, they just want Windows entertainment systems in the living room with GAAS games running on the platform.

Maybe if Microsoft stopped cancelling games sales would increase.
