Well it`s only released in Japan so far so...

Why isn't it released in the west? Hopefully with these sales on the PS4, they'll release ww. Hmm I guess that is surprising that it sold more on the PS4 than the 3DS considering the differences in their install base there. Hmm perhaps people prefer to play it on a big tv/home console.

Not seeing how the PS4 version has been more successful than the 3DS version given that the 3DS version has outsold it every week since launch.

Week 1

[3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 1,148,888 (New)
[PS4] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 950,315 (New)

Week 2
[3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 300,714 (1,456,601)
[PS4] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 200,798 ((1,151,113)

[3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 116,615 (1,573,216)
[PS4] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 91,147 (1,242,260)

The 3DS version has sold over 300,000 more units than the PS4 version to date. The interview was given almost 2 weeks ago, but there was no point sales for the PS4 were ever stronger than for the 3ds version. Even if digital sales were higher for the PS4 version, they would have had to have been almost 150,000 than the 3DS digital sales in week 1 just to pull even, let alone ahead.

Like I said, the PS4 version is sold for ~9K yen, 3k more expensive than the 3DS version. So even if it didn't outsell it in unit sales, it brought in much more money.

But that isn't what the report is actually talking about. Suppose they had 1M in mind for PS4, and 2M for 3DS. The way it turned out, sales were indeed stronger on PS4. The target goals for the PS4 version were lower, the PS4 met and exceeded those even if it didn't outsell 3DS in unit sales. Meanwhile 3DS underperformed.

It also costed much more to develop.

Great news for Sony and the PlayStation Store. I don't think we are to far away from digital taking the lions share of sales on home consoles. Better value, more accessible, more devices, all in all digital is an incredible value compaired to physical.

It will be very interesting to see how things play out once this is released in the West. I imagine the PS4 will have a much bigger lead in other regions.

Perhaps the Switch version will help push more sales for the game. A version you can play anywhere may be appealing for Japanese consumers.

A 350k difference in digital sales is a bit much, don't you think? It isn't like there are any stock issues for the game, or that it's a smaller title where people don't mind not having a physical copy.

Yeah, the latest difference according to Media Create is 331k, so that would be about 25% digital. And it would need to be more as well, since there are digital sales on 3DS too.
I've heard about games being 30%~digital in the west but not sure about Japan.
He did say this in context of reaching sales expectations, and those are to my knowledge usually (always?) presented in terms of units sold, as the calculations based on revenue are made internally, and don't mean much to us who don't know the costs of logistics, retailers cut, etc, so the sales targets are translated into units sold.

Does anyone know if any Japanese game has had a 30%~ digital attach rate?

It's certainly possible in Japan. They do seem to buy plenty digital. I don't know why it would be any different than in the west.

You can do it already on the 3DS.

Just not in the sense of a home console game like the PS4 version. Think of BotW on the go, you can't do that with the 3DS due to the scope and power BoTW has as a console game. Same with Mario Odyssey when that comes out. Playing those games on the go are (BoTW)/can potentially be (Odyssey) enticing to Japanese gamers.

People confused stop thinking that sold through equals shipped.

The ammount shipped in physical + digital is what they are refering to.
