Forums - Sales Discussion - Dragon Quest XI sales stronger on PS4, on track to meet lower end of sales target

The date on the report says 4th August. So they were talking about preorders and initial sales. Since then the 3ds has overtaken it.

That's kind of murky...he didn't say in sales figures. Probably in overall profit but I don't think it'll be in copies sold. In the long run, the 3DS version will have longer legs if we're talking copies sold. Profit will naturally be higher with PS4.

No, they would be talking revenue, not profit. Big difference.

Profit would naturally be higher on the 3DS, due to lower development costs. And revenue woudl be naturally higher on PS4, due to higher cost of game at retail.

Sales pretty similar to 2015 too.  Fact is it's not dying and actually getting stronger now.  Your point is invalid.  Ps3 launching didn't prevent ps2 from selling strongly or software titles selling well.

PS3 was never succesful in Japan.

Besides  usa and maybe  the uk, which country  did ps3  sell 10mill? Ps3 whas verry successful, and ps4 is shaping  up to  be even better.

Remember, Nintendo  had to trow away there 8th gen console  because  it got  absolutely  crushed between  ps4 and xbox.

Releasing  a new system  so Early is never  a good thing.

Sure, sure but you get my point. If it's about income or physical/digital copies is what I'm concerned about. I understand profit doesn't come into the picture until they've made their money back, I was just trying to get something down.

Glad to see it do well on consoles. Now bring it to PC...

You're not making much sense.

Take a look at what the PS2 sold in Japan.

And what does the Wii U have to do with any of this? Releasing a new syem so early is never a good thing? According to who? Are you predicting the Switch will be a failure then?

Financially it was a disaster for Sony but in terms of units sold it did good given the market.

Anyway it's success is irrelevant to the fact consoles like ps2/psp/3DS can do really well in terms of software and hardware late in life.

That's likely in value, or comparatively to expectations. But as he said, the 3DS install base will likely allow the version to continue selling in the long run.

How do we know if this is value or retail + digital?

I don't think they would be refering to value without specifying that that was the case. Every other time they used the term "strong sales" in the same Q1 financial briefing, they were refering to quantities of sales (there was no second version to compare to).

And from what I understand they count shipped units as sales. And that includes digital sales, yes.

When we heard that DQ11 had shipped 3 million units (including digital) a few days after we saw that the game sold 2,09 m physical units, it was a good indication that digital sales may have been pretty high. And the PS4 version is likely to have stronger digital sales than the 3DS. So it wouldn't be hard to imagine this bridging the gap between the PS4 and 3DS version.

A 350k difference in digital sales is a bit much, don't you think? It isn't like there are any stock issues for the game, or that it's a smaller title where people don't mind not having a physical copy.

Bet with PeH:

I win if Arms sells over 700 000 units worldwide by the end of 2017.

Bet with WagnerPaiva:

I win if Emmanuel Macron wins the french presidential election May 7th 2017.

3DS clearly reaches it's end of life and the version seems to be inferior by far. This is why 3DS sales are so bad.

Not seeing how the PS4 version has been more successful than the 3DS version given that the 3DS version has outsold it every week since launch.

Week 1

[3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 1,148,888 (New)
[PS4] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 950,315 (New)

Week 2
[3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 300,714 (1,456,601)
[PS4] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 200,798 ((1,151,113)

[3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 116,615 (1,573,216)
[PS4] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 91,147 (1,242,260)

The 3DS version has sold over 300,000 more units than the PS4 version to date. The interview was given almost 2 weeks ago, but there was no point sales for the PS4 were ever stronger than for the 3ds version. Even if digital sales were higher for the PS4 version, they would have had to have been almost 150,000 than the 3DS digital sales in week 1 just to pull even, let alone ahead.
