What caught my attention there is the difference in Users score.  While Sony and Nintendo users have given it a 9.0, the Xbox users have given it an 8.0.

I think it goes to show the difference in tastes in those platforms.

Pay no attention to user ratings on Metacritic, too many trolls there, most likely Sony or Nintendo fans downvoting the Xbox One version due to their own belief that the game doesn't belong on Xbox. The user rating on the Xbox One Store, which you can only rate if you actually own the game, is 4.9/5 with 578 ratings.

Ohh, I see.

Having just completed it myself, I agree with Ultramushroomz: this is the best game in the Sonic franchise! It's got the perfect balance of nostalgic elements and new ones, the best special stages (in spite of minor flaws), and the most complex and fun boss fights, to say nothing of frankly the most heart. It was no mistake for them to have fans make this game! ALL official Sonic games should be made by fans going forward, IMO.

So is this all nostalgia or can it hang with todays platformers?

I've played about half of the game (on Switch), and must agree that it is great.

I'd like to see a remake of the Genesis Sonic games. Actually, there are a lot of other Genesis games that could use remakes. Remasters are nice too, but I think remakes are a much better way to sell to younger gamers that don't have any nostalgia for the old versions.

It's just as good as any modern Indie platformer. This is coming from a guy that thought Sonic 1-3 just barely deserve 7/10.

My first 2D Sonic game, wish me luck !

If you enjoy it you should go back and play Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles, and CD, the Christian Whitehead rereleases where possible.

2 > 3 > Knuckles > 1 >>>>>>>>>>> CD

My biggest fear is the levels are going to be too CD-zany in Mania, which I never cared for. As a kid I never got to play CD and always thought it looked amazing, then I finally got a chance with the Sonic Gem Collection and...well. It wasn't fun at all navigating those levels. Even some of 3's levels I used to enjoy as a kid like Marble Garden felt tedious when I went back to it a few years ago, though I used to always play as Tails instead of Sonic so I guess things were "easier".

Hoping this game recaptures the magic of when I was a kid and loved Sonic.

I'm hoping for Amy to be included as a secret unlockable at the end. She would function rather well as an alternative hard mode ala Sonic Advance, plus it'd just be cool to play as her with her classic design.

It's really cool they're making this; I almost thought Generations was gonna be the last Sonic game to truly be excited over. Very glad they're making something almost purely done for classic fans! In a way very different to, say, NSMB. The visuals and music all give off these vibes that really pay homage to the classics in a way Nintendo were fearful of when designing the very vanilla-looking NSMB series. They really should take note when designing the next 2D Mario game.
