Forums - Nintendo Discussion - In theory: Treasure Tracker 2 using the Odyssey engine, thoughts?

Never played the original, but heard many good things about it. I remember seeing some side-by-side comparisons between scenes in it and other games they featured in and it looked so good

Why not just use the old engine? The game's basic concepts are rather limited so the engine Odyssey is using really wouldn't be pushed and aside from graphics it what would you need the new for?

The first game was alright for an original concept, but I would never touch it again. It had no replayability and Mummy Me Maze Forever was unforgivably pointless. The original did not sell that well so I doubt Nintendo would have a sequel in the works.

It sold much more than one million, and it was a game that was reusing assets from Super Mario World, which was a game that already had the whole concept of Captain Toad locked down....

1.32 million or something. I suppose that's "decent" for the Wii U, but honestly, Treasure Tracker was pretty forgettable. It's not until this thread that I was reminded of that game's existence. It doesn't seem to be a requested game by any means that will help push system sales. No need for everything to have a sequel tbh. Nintendo should prioritize original titles like ARMS and Splatoon. ARMS did very well for a full-priced fighting game.

The original Captain Toad Treasure Tracker reused a lot of the code and assets of 3D World in order to produce a new game quickly and cheaply.

Would you guys be interested in a sequel that similarly reuses a lot of Odyssey's graphics to get a new game out in 2018?

How could that possibly be bad?

Would rather have a wacky, weird and edgy Wario more than Captain Toad though.

We should be asking the same thing with Breath of the Wild I think too.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

I liked Captain Toad, was fun but a bit short so it could work out again with a new engine

I havent played the game yet and I plan to play it sometime by the end of february. But if I remember correctly, Nintendo once said that, for its big budget games, usually 2 million units was enough to pull in significant profits.Treasure Tracker is obviosly a very low budget game, seeing that it reuses many assets from Super Mario 3D World and the game concept was already in that game. This is a game that selling 300 K would probably be considered a sucess, especially since Treasure Tracker had the feeling to be more of a experimental game and a fun side project for Nintendo.

Now, wether it was forgetable or not, I cant say since I never played. But if the game is as good as the few stages that were in Super Mario 3D World, and if its as good as people say, it would be a nice addition to the Switch. And a game that could be made in less than 2 years, and by a very small team.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Yeah the game was fun to look at it...another game I engaged in purely because of its aesthetic creativity. I keep forgetting that gameplay still needs to be the main priority. But I'm hopeful they'll have a breakthrough in that department if that team were to recollect themselves after a good break, which they've certainly had by now.

It was fun, but a bit flat with the repetitive game mechanic

Sure, a new Captain Toad game would be cool. But, honestly, I'd rather have the 3D Mario team make Super Mario Odyssey 2 instead. The Wii got Galaxy and Galaxy 2, while the Wii U got 3D World and Captain Toad. If they're only making 2 games per console, I'd much prefer another fully-fledged 3D Mario.

It would be amazing. The first one looked noticeably better than 3D World, I can't even imagine how good a new one would look.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

It was likely very cheap to produce given it reused a lot of code and assets from 3D World, so at over a million copies sold, I expect the first game managed to turn a profit.

Given how good Odyssey manages to look while pushing open levels, focussing that power into smaller stages should make for prettier visuals than anything we've seen on Switch so far.
