It was very easy to chip a PS1. They went to a shop to buy a PS1. Than they take it into an IT store and ask the guy to chip the PS1. $40 later you can now go to any market place and buy pirated PS1 games for bargin basement deals. Gamers didnt need to own a CD burner or have access to the Net. Once Chipped your in the market because now your PS1 reads burnt CDs. Thats all it is and all it takes and it was very cheap to do aswell. You honestly think the PS1 sold so well due to just being completely awesome? haha Same goes for PS2. They were pirate hungry machines which just about every one wanted one for where i am from. And it was easy to obtain PS1 and PS2 burnt games as they were sold at any black market and discount bins. It was a common thrend which lead to many gamers buying one for the cheap games. Ever wonder why the N64 1st party games sold more than most PS1 titles on a console with less than half the install base? Theres your anwser. Nintendo hated piracy and knew that was the case with CDs hence why they stayed with cartidges. |
The biggest draw of piracy is that you don't have to pay for whatever piece of entertainment or software that you're after. Why would someone mod their PS1 to play backup games but then go around and purchase bootleg copies?
Essentially youre suggesting there was a large market (for PlayStation) that:
Didnt have access to online
Still somehow knew where and how to find Ps1 mod chips or that such a thing existed
Had easy access to a black market of pirated games (let me just walk down to the local Walmart and pick up some bootlegs)
I don't dispute that there were exceptional cases where all this pertained. But your anecdotal "everyone I know did this" means jack squat to the discussion at hand. That tells us nothing. How many people did you know that did this? 1? 2? 350? Are all your friends tech enthusiasts? Was this just something every Australian family did? I honestly call bullshit and until you prove that these kinds of people were more widespread than a small handful, this is tales from your ass. #ShowMeTheReceipts
And yes, I do believe at least 90% of PS1s sales were due to how awesome the console is. The Sony name was incredibly powerful during that era. Same with PS2 although I could see a proportionally higher amount of PS2 owners coming from adults that wanted a DVD player.
