Forums - Politics Discussion - Can someone explain North Korea to me?

Long story short a load of politics happened in the past that lead to the Korean war which from what I've read was a more communist focused group in conflict with a more capitalist focused group and obviously the west intervened as at the time the whole communist vs capitalist craze in politics was in full swing.

The war ended with the country remaining to be split into two separate countries with the North being more of a military state, unfortunately their leaders are some what crazed but their threats are partly the result of politics in recent decades. They've viewed the US as eternal enemies because of the intervention and have seen intervention happen in other countries the west has had issues with (Iraq, Syria, Libya etc...) and are now arming themselves to the teeth in preparation for what they see as a forgone conclusion.

I don't think North Korea could win a war against the US but at the same time I think they could actually inflict some notable damage if they really do have weapons that can hit US soil as one of the major tactical advantages of the US in a war has always been where the country is situated so no country outside of Japan in WWII has really been able to strike at them directly. This is why the weapon tests North Korea is doing is of some concern for US officials.

Quick overview (as I understand it)...

Russia and the US were allies in the second world war. At the end, when it was obvious who was going to win, there was a bit of in-fighting as to who was going to define the future of the world. This led to some "interesting" military decisions that weren't 100% targeted at fighting the Germans/Japanese.

This is what the conspiracy nuts in Japan believe was the reason behind the US showing off their new "nuclear" weapons at Hiroshima given that Japan had "obviously lost" already. Note that Japan didn't surrender and an invasion would probably have been even more costly in term of lives, of course.

Roughly speaking Russia went with Communism and US went with Capitalism. And it was *really* important which side you were on (not entirely sure why myself).

This escalated into the Korean War, where communist forces from the north - funded by Commies - tried to take over Korea. The US and others fought to liberate South Korea as a capitalist country. Then lots of money was pumped into South Korea, making it home to Samsung and one of the most advanced countries in the area. For completely altruistic reasons, not just to be a PR poster child for Capitalism.

Other places have similar stories (Iran, Syria, Vietnam) but North Korea stands out as a screwed up nut job. Basically it ended up with a group of military people who really enjoy the high-life and don't give a damn about the suffering of the North Korean people. Plus some little kid call Kim-Jung-Un who doesn't really do anything himself.

FWIW - China believes that NK will collapse by itself if you trade with them. Ironically this is what I think about Cuba (really that tiny island and the US can't just buy it out?). South Korea just want to be unified into a single country peacefully.

I'm not a fan of just sitting back and watching, but Iraq/ISIS shows that intervention isn't as easy as "I have a better army" (although Afghanistan's Taliban and Libya's Ghedaffi are arguably better off gone). Plus think about it: you may hate Trump or Hillary, but would you like the rest of the world to come and "liberate the US"?

It's weird that so much of modern international politics has roots in USSR vs USA. That's just why people should just be excellent to each other...

Thank you for this objective overview and level headed response. I agree wholeheartedly. I'm from Germany, a country which was lucky and overcame that strange fight of power...for the most part at least. I wish, just like in Germany and the eastern block the people in NK would finally rise up and do it themselves..they're just too blinded by the controlling state they are forced to be imprisoned in.

That said there are many other powers involved. One being China is kind of happy having NK as a buffer state and not having an US controlled reunited Korea right at their borders.

well everyone will give you his point of view, but N Korea is dangerous cos it's threatening US allies like S Korea, the south is weaker now in terms of military and can not defend itself, on the other hand there is so much of US interest in that area, Japan, Australia, and most allies of south east Asia, that's a big big bargain we can not afford to lose
I still think the only way to solve this is to set down and talk, but with whom????, US can only reason with China if China can force N Korea to accept the deal

okay i will explain. its Korea, but its the north part of Korea. in simpler terms it means the "Up" (no... no... not the movie!) the "Up" part of Korea. there is a "south Korea". but thats because its in the southern part of korea. that means "down". got it champ?

North Korea is an innocent country that is being picked on, They have done nothing to me or anyone I know. Imo south Korea should unite with the north and kick out all foreign militaries

I'd never support any action against NK

North Korea is one of several examples of how socialism leads to despotism.

The twist here is the the Kim Jong-un, like his predecessors, positions himself as a god among people and anyone who opposes him is jailed, tortured, and/or killed. Nazi germany-style.

This condition is owed to Korea splitting during a civil war in the 1950s. South Korea embraced capitalism, while the North attempted to forcibly impose socialism across all of Korea.

Not sure if that was supposed to sound like something Trump would say but it sure does.

Also, I would like to say in North Korean citizen are really innocent in all this, but like all wars they will be killed or hurt badly. They are starving and must do what Kim Jong Un commands them, even if they don't believe into the propaganda (not all do). If someone throws you in they don't need propaganda to control you.

Did I mention a wall, how sexy my daughter is or Mexicans?

The USA is fighting for Capitalism against the evil North Korean Communist regime. The North Korean people are oppressed by an evil regime under Kim Jung Un. It is time to free North Korea now!
