Forums - General Discussion - The Rise and Fall of a certain Star

As stated above.  As a mod, in your mod function, you must separate your personal preference.  Hate seeing a bunch of NX threads?  No one cares.  It's like politics, some will like them, some will hate them, but the role of the mod is to simply encourage civil discussion.  Star had a bit of a challenge detatching his preferences.

I was more than happy with that NX threads ban. At that time, when we still knew almost nothing about it, at least a couple of threads were made everyday about the damn thing, and sometimes the number was much, much higher (and with a lot of duplicates).

Sure, the site slowed down considerably, but it was a welcome relief.

Relief to you, not to others, and gaming discussion stalled. That's the point.  Of course lots of people hated the threads, many others loved them.  Curbing creation of threads in a forum is stupid, with the exception of duplicate topics.

Some cared; many enjoyed them - obviously, since people were making them all the time.  That's the point.  Also, there's no need to be condescending. I think most users are more than mentally capabale of understanding the extreme stress you deal with.  It's right up there with fighting the Taliban and heart surgery.

Easy contender for douche post of the year award right there.

Good, it was supposed to be.  It was a douche response to a douche comment.  Or maybe you feel you're not capable of dealing with the emotional trauma of being a mod?  Apparently it's beyond comprehension.  One of the only ways you can find out what it's like is allow Darth Vader to stab you.

NO... NOT ANOTHER USER...

DON'T DO WHAT SMEAGS DID TO US!!!

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

The goal of my post wasn't to be condescending, rather, to present you with two facts...

  • A. People cared about the volume of NX threads. We did something about that. You claimed nobody cared, which was false.
  • B. Being a regualr user is far less stressful than being a mod. That is a bottom line. The point works itself into the theme of the thread (which was why I quoted you).

If being honest with you is "douchey", in your view, I can't do anything about that. If you're prepared to make a comment like "x person was a terrible mod", and then try to explain what it is to be a mod, then you gave an invitation to fill in some blanks. ;P

CGI always sounds condescending

I didn't know you could hear me through text!

-Saying being a mod is more stressful than not is fine - of course it is, as it adds responsibility.  Saying average users can't comprehend the stress levels a douche comment.

-You did something about NX threads that was against the long-standing guidelines of the forum, it was a poor decision, and you reversed it.

-Star was a bad mod.  I gave an example of why - the NX decision was a poor decision.  He gave other examples himself in this very thread.  As a general principal of fairness in law, all laws should be universal and consistent.  So, you shouldn't make an arbitrary rule that all NX discussion must be in one thread.  If it's a good rule it should apply to all hardware, and you would have one thread for each piece of hardware.  Obviously that would be stupid, and once you see that if the rule is applied universally and doesn't work, you sould be able to see that you have stepped across from objectivity to personal preference.  A forum is it's members; their posts and opinions are its content. The mod team should exist to encourage this content to grow as much as possible. My observation is that Star tended to allow his own preference for how discussion should take place or his own feelings on a topic to impede his mission to assist The Forum with its univeral goal of simply allow the discussion to take place.

Didn't you forget that each hardware brand has it's own thread and alot of what is discussed there is perfect for those places? The NX threads were getting out of hand. Every lttile idea of what color it could be got it's own thread. Not every thought deserves a thread to discuss it. It was creating alot of thread clutter so it made sense to limit the creation of nx threads at least for a bit.

I was definitely on the anti-NX thread side back then, but honestly, not much has changed, has it? It still feels like we get a Switch thread for any piece of news we get on it nowadays, regardless of how irrelevant it might be - granted it's only for solid news now, but still.

I think it was a good decision to make it into one thread. Sure there's a lot of Switch threads, but they're usually about a small announcement - and then no one talks about it again. It's not like speculation threads(or perhaps even worse ... the Switch "sales prediction" threads)

It's not anywhere near as bad as back then because they would create 10 threads for every rumor and speculation threads would be created off of the rumor. Now it's mainly (very optimistic) prediction threads, what wii u games to port to switch, and games coming out for it. How you like that wii u not website thread? haha.

Star, i only think you were wrong in trying to bend the rules to force actions from the mods. But i don't think theres anything wrong with expressing your honest feelings about Donald Trump. He is a scham and theres people out there still defending him besides all the lies. It is infuriating and it does deserve to be met with intensity. Theres is nothing to be ashamed about in that regard.

I will always value honesty above holding things in to make yourself appear to be something you're not. Be yourself and act within forum rules. It makes for more interesting debates.
Quite honestly, it's impossible to be generally liked in this forum unless you are a hardcore nintendo fan, so... no point in bending over about it.

No, the point was that the forum was flooded with NX discussion threads, and that needed to stop to allow other kind of discussions to appear.

If people wanted to talk about NX, then there were already a couple of official and semi official threads that some users tried to keep up to date where people could do that, but there are some users that refuse to join an already existing thread because, for some reason, they seem to believe that if they make a thread about a certain topic, it will be better. That behavior needed to be adressed, and this was the least bad way of doing so.

Besides, it's not the first time a certain kind of topic has been banned. There was a time where elimination threads (Top 50 Nintendo/Sony/Sega/whatever games, Top 50 movies, songs, and a long etc.) were all over the place, until the mods decided that enough was enough and banned them, only allowing their creation under mod approval first.

Even if you don't like this kind of measures, they are needed to keed a forum in place.
